Happy with your 6mt shifting?

My 04 6mt is extremely notchy and occassionally grinding. I have owned stick shift cars previously and i am not new to manual trannies. I wanted to see if anyone else in the midwest region (specifically Indiana) have experienced the same problem and if it was fixed by your dealer.

On the other hand, if you feel your 6mt is up to your satisfaction, please advice, i might request you to help me with a test drive of my car and tell me what you think of my tranny (of course with me in the car!!).

I live in Indianapolis/Lafayette area. Thanks in advance.

Re: Happy with your 6mt shifting?

I agree, I just picked up my 2004.5 6mt a coupe weeks ago and I am not real happy with shifting. Sometimes it is difficult to get into gears, down shifting takes much effort, and I have had a couple of grinds here and there. Would different fuild in the tranny help? or a short shift kit? I just came from a 97 540 6spd, and I had many problems with that car(as it was used and abused) and required lots of bleeding, short shift kit and tranny mounts before it was "good". I know from that car that the tranny mounts would allow the tranny to move enough during cornering that it was tough to get it into to gear. The stiffer mounts made a big difference. My only concern with this car is I wonder if stiffer mounts would translate into vibrating and noise, as my stick vibrates a good amount already. any thoughts?

I'm happy with it now that they replaced my MT under warranty. Really wasn't impressed prior to that. Gates are a lot easier to follow and it seems even a bit shorter of a throw. I'm up in Michigan City right on the lake if you wanna make the trip up :-)

You had your tranny replaced? Why exactly? How many miles? What lead up to this? Was it difficult to get them to replace it? Please explain! Mine only has 1,600 miles and I am not real happy with it.

Re: Happy with your 6mt shifting?

Just as I turned 22K miles (have 24K now) the gears started to grind from 4th-6th and from 5th-6th. Got so bad it wouldn't even engage 6th and instead would pop out of gear when forced. I could feel it in the floor it would grind so badly. Prior to that, the gates were always a bit hard to follow. It never flowed nicely thru the gears. Always had to sort of force it into 5th pretty hard and 4th always gave me troubles.

I took it to the closest dealer (90 miles one way) and had them look at it. Long story short, they basically told me I was a liar and said they couldn't duplicate the problem, so they weren't going to replace the trans. I fought with them for over 2 weeks, yelled, threatened to sue, and finally drove over there to prove that there was a problem. Turns out they didn't even drive the car long enough to get it into 5th gear let alone 6th. After we took it down the hwy it ground 6 out of the 7 times I shifted it. They then decided to replace it.

Not sure how much income I lost from missed time at work dealing with that whole mess. If they cant duplicate the problem, they wont even talk to you. I couldn't believe the crappy level of service from the dealer and consumer affairs I got. Wrote them a 3 page letter about it and they actually responded to me. But in the end the car got fixed.

Re: Happy with your 6mt shifting?

Let it break in a little and things should loosen up a bit.

Also, make sure you clutch-in all the way and enter
the gates as if it was a 5 speed...the gear ratios are
pretty far apart vs other 6speeds so there is a slight
pause before you can enter the next gate while
shifting up.

Ive been driving MT for a while myself and needed about
1.5k miles to really get use to the trans. The stubby
shifter did not feel at home at first.

Re: Happy with your 6mt shifting?

As well, I am new to this forum, and the world of Infiniti. I just got my 6MT coupe a couple of weeks ago, and have about 600 miles on it.
So far, the shifting has been quite easy, and the gating smooth. I just traded up from a 2002 SE-R SpecV, so the only thing I'm not totally used to yet is the gear ratio difference. I would have to agree that the gearing is longer for this 6MT than I would have expected, but I think I can get used to it.
