Chicago- Stereo install
Is anyone looking at upgrading the stock system? Have you shopped around for quotes of the install? If so, what kind of system are you looking at? Who are you looking at installing your set-up?

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
What's up nepog3. I'm gonna start on the stereo upgrade this week. Not sure what I'm gonna put in just yet. I have the "base" system in my 03 Sedan. I am actually pretty pleased with what came from the factory . . . but I also know that it could be improved. I am leasing the car, so I think that I will try to keep the modifications to a minimum. I am thinking about dropping in some new door speakers (6.5 components in the front, and 5.25 coaxials in the rear, MB Quart or Infinity?), and maybe a powered sub. I am not sure if the head unit has enough juice to power the door speakers, but I figure it's a decent start, as I can add an amp or two later. As for a sub, I was leaning toward an Infinity Basslink, mainly for it's ease of installation, and cost effectiveness. I will likely do the install myself. I used to build competition cars back in the day . . . and actually built one that placed 4th at the IASCA finals. I am not really looking to end up with a competition quality vehicle. . . just something that's a little cleaner and full. What are you thinking about doing?

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
Hey Brock,
Thanks for the response!
I agree that the base system is sufficient but the sound quality doesn't sound full. It feels like it's missinig some of the higher and lower frequencies that I am use to. So
I was thinking of installing a pair of MB Quart PSD216 up front and leaving the stock speakers in the rear. I currently have an 12" Eclipse sub to throw in the trunk, a Punch 240 and an old Phoenix Gold amp. I was going to run the MB Quart's with the Fosgate and use the Phoenix Gold to run my sub.
Problem is I am going to have a shop do the install for me but I was hoping that someone has already had a similar type of a set up installed in their G so I bring my car to the same shop.
One of my friends has the Infinity BassLink and he really likes the sound of the sub. It's a nice tight bass and its' not too sloppy like his iold Solobaric.
What part of Chicago are you from? Do you have any shops that you could reccomend that is reasonably priced?
Thanks!

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
It sounds like your plan of attack is reasonable. I agree with you in the fact that it seem like we are missing the higher and lower end of the spectrum with the stock system. Unfortunately, I have never had any work done since I have been living here (Winnetka). When I had my competition cars, I lived in Springfield. I have made several calls to install shops all over the North Shore, and nobody has worked on a G35 yet. I am a bit hesitant to be the guinnea pig for someone whom I do not know. My main concern for my install is the lack of line-level (RCA) signal. I really don't wanna drop the factory head unit . . . I like the way it looks in the dash, and I like the 6 discs. I was thinking about getting a high quality converter, and running a 4 channel amp for the highs (as I posted before), and the Basslink (to save the space in the trunk). I think that it would be a huge improvement over what I have now.
Let me know what you find out about installers . . . and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
MB Quart is okay but try a set of Dynaudio or Boston Acoustics Pro's. Both blew the MB Quart's away when I was auditioning speakers. I ended up with Dynaudio's in my last car and they are just outstanding. I got them in Chicago at a place called Soundwerks by Ohare. They did killer installation and the installer there actually went to go work for Dynaudio. Otherwise ABT is not bad but kinda pricey and offer limited brands.

Thanks for thr recommendation Guru,
Are the Dynaaudio priecy? I know the MB Quartzs that I was looking at was going to be about 300.00. I will definitely check out Soundwerks. I did stop by ABT but they were asking an arm and a leg for the install. In addition they wouldn't install equipment that was not purchased from their store.

Thanks for the info, Guru.
If I remember correctly, Dynaudio was pricey when I last shopped for equipment. I think I paid close to $600 for my Dynaudio components in '97. They were remarkable . . . the best speakers I ever owned . . . wish I had kept them now. I am looking to invest < $700 total for my minor upgrades . . . but I will look into them.
I am going out near O'Hare today . . . so I will check out Soundwerks.

Yes, Dynaudio is not cheap. I think I paid around $1200 for my 3 piece setup with 8 inch drivers and their 4 inch dome midrange. Dynaudio US office is based in the Chicago area so there should be a few dealers around. For something cheaper go for the Boston Pro's. They are about same price as the MB Quartz and really good. A nice car like the G35 deserves better than MB Quart I think.

Guru,
I agree that the Dynaudios are the best money can buy . . . not at my point in life, though. I am not sure about nepog, but I have too many other bad habits to pay for. ; )

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
Brock/Guru,
I am in the same boat as you. I don't have the disposable income to spend $1200.00 for a pair of speakers up front. I am budgeting 350.00 for a pair of components up front, 150.00 for wiring, cables, misc. and 250.00 for the install. I had a pair of MB Quartz in my old truck and really enjoyed the music that came from those speakers. When I was initially shopping around for a pair of speakers for my truck, I checked out the Boston Acoustic components and the Polk components but walked away with the MB Quartz. To be honest with you I believe that they all sounded great but the MB Quartz sounded a bit richer.
I' m sure the DynaAudio's sound great but I am looking for a decent sounding system something a bit fuller than the stock system, that's all.
But you did peak my interest, I want to check out how the DynaAudio sounds.
Are you guys looking at doig anything else to you G? Rims, Exhaust, body kit???

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
No I was too busy. We are moving to a larger place soon so we can house the dyno. As for my G35, I don't have one. I'm buying my brother one and I'd like to put on our Power Enterprise twin turbo kit on it to show people how to get 400 reliable HP out of this car. Should be pretty easy.

Re: Chicago- Stereo install
Hey Guys,
I just leased a 2003.5 sedan today and I am also looking for someone to do an install in the Chicago area. I've got a pair of dynaudio 7" mids, a pair of 5.75" mids, and a pair of MD100 tweeters. Does anyone know if these will drop into any of the factory speaker locations? These speakers are larger in diameter and deeper than most other component speakers on the market. I've also got the non-Bose stereo and plan on keeping the factory head.
