Maybe The Perfect Car

Hi all! As a car enthusiast I guess I have been looking for the "perfect" car for my wife (and me too) that is not only a true performance car but also is stylish and functional as a daily driver. I think we have found it in the used '07 G35X we just purchased. My wife and I are in our mid fifties and were considering purchasing a used Lexus GX470 when we came across the G35. By the time we pulled out of the dealership's parking lot during the test drive she was saying "I love this car, I really love this car"! After a spirited 15 mile drive I was saying "I love this car, I really gotta have this car"!

Her 3 previous cars were an '00 Acura CL Type S, an '02 Lexus ES300 and an '05 Acura TL. This car is by far the best of the bunch. We had looked at purchasing a G35 in 2005 instead of the TL but were blown away by the TL's stereo and Nav, but soon regreted the purchase. The quality was seriously lacking in that car after owning a Lexus but this G35 at 20,000 miles is rock solid. The performance is amazing and the handling is the best I have experienced in a sports sedan. I know a little bit about handling since in the past I have owned a '95 300ZX, an '01 Miata, an' 03 S2000 and currently drive an '06 S2000.

I anticipate many years of satisfied ownership of this car and have lately found myself surfing AutoTrader and Cars.com for a G35 or G37 Coupe (and saying goodbye to the S2000) if I find a well cared for one owner. Infiniti has certainly impressed me with this black gem.

Congratulations on our purchase! A 15-mile test drive!? Maybe I should move to Ohio!

In all honesty though my first time driving an '07 G35X base model as a loaner during service was an eye-opening experience. Infiniti has improved immensely on the previous gen sedans. If I were older with the need for a family sedan, I'd seriously consider the 2nd gen G35 sedans.

And nice S2K! If you get a G35 you might miss revving as high as you can now. But as a previous owner of a JDM H22 Prelude, I can tell you the torque of a V6 will make you forget all about your 8500K+ redlines in no time!

Yea, like I said I almost bought a G35 in '05 (so close I registered here but ultimately bought a TL). Honestly though I did not care for the G's interior and the car seemed too narrow compared to the others in it's class. At the time it seemed a step or 2 below an Acura or Lexus, IMO. My wife really wanted front wheel drive so after almost buying the G35 we looked at the TL. The ELS stereo was amazing, as was the Nav. I was smitten. Besides being a car enthusiast I am also an audiophile.

In hindsight I now feel Acura puts more effort into being the first to give you the latest bells and whistles while at the same time try to convince you they are a serious contender in the sports sedan catagory. Now that I have driven a real sports sedan (this G35) there is absolutely no comparison . FWD just doesn't get it. If the TL would get the RL's Super Handling AWD then maybe I would take another look.

As it was, our TL was a major dissapointment. The dash faded, the headliner came loose. There was a new rattle almost monthly and the paint on the bumpers didn't quite match the rest of the car. Every thing I listed here is a common problem with the TL. All the Acura forums confirm this. And if you didn't get Nav, Acura put really crappy Bridgestones on the car that barely make it to 20K miles. Luckily I had Nav and got the Michelins. I have the Goodyear Eagle RS-A's on this car and they still look new @ 20K.

Although our G35 is a used car it is almost perfect. The only issue I have noticed is the grill has black spots on it that I thought were specks of tar but it appears to be chips in the chrome exposing the black plastic underneath it. Is this a common problem with the 2nd gen G35's? If so is there a TSB or recall for it?
