Another, Dad buys kid a car story

Hello,

I am Darren (DAM) , father to Luke, who is the newest owner of a really nice looking pearl white on tan 2004 G35.

We have had the car just over a week now and it's mostly a great runner. The engine is solid, has not consumed any oil so far, no smoke, purrs like a kitten at idle.

There are some codes being thrown, and it has gone into limp on several occasions on startup. I will go over to the g35 center and list the codes and issues I have located.

Cosmetically it is good condition. Outside the paint is swirly, and I am going to get started with the clay bar today. Zero door dings, and a little bump on the front bumper that has managed to crack the paint into a spider web pattern. The splash shield is missing fasteners and broken, hanging low and barely hanging on. Is that item truly a necessity?

Inside. The instrument panel plastic has two breaks and I have not located that with buying the whole cluster. Can you buy it alone? The center console has a couple of cracks and the passenger heated seat switch is mashed down a little but it operates. Seat wear on the drivers left bolster is past the shine on the leather but other than that she's a real clean girl.

The last owner provided me with receipts for the following work:

Regular oil changes with semi synthetic every 4K or so.
New fan clutch
New alternator
Timing chain assembly and water pump replaced
Rear wheel bearing and brakes
Decent tires replaced in 2014 including hazard warranty
New battery

I am glad to have found this unit with a lot of critical wear parts replaced, repairs made.

My hope is to learn as much about these cars with your help as I have had success working on my 2002 bmw f650gs over at www.f650.com.

DAM

Hello there! 1200GS owner here .

The paint on these cars is lousy, your spidering in the front is way more common then you'd think. You need paint REPAIR. Best left to a professional as it requires use of an orbital polishing wheel with multiple discs and compounds. As for the guages panel, I think you replace the guages as a set... Check eBay for the part.

Welcome to the forum, and perhaps you would like to share why you have a GS but your dad owns this car !

Uhh, paint repair won't fix spiderwebbing. Only repainting it will. Paint repair will only fix faded clearcoats that are still fully intact (no obvious sun damage to the paint).

Due to tampering with odometer, it became illegal for an unauthorized person to break open the instrument panel unit sometime back in the 90s, so they are sold and replaced as an entire unit.

I'm honestly not even sure about that authorized person part anymore. Only dealers were allowed to work on the instrument panel back then, but I think it might now be against federal law to even open the thing.

I believe it is the dad that made the thread and OP. That's how I read it.
