Actually I'm with Gary on this one. I've seen a lot of threads over the 5+ years I've been here where (often) newbies will express catch cans as a solution to OC problems.

Catch cans are A solution.
There's 2 ways I know of to prevent oil consumption;
1. Baffled, quality oil catch can - perhaps 50-95% effective. To know for certain, one would have to measure the oil caught in the can every time he added oil, measuring the amount of oil added as well and compare. My mishimoto baffled can is probably around 75-85% effective.
b. No pcv. No crank case ventilation hooked up to either valve cover but instead vented to the atmosphere. Near 100% effective as a little oil will run out the hose as it did in my previous setup. Filters on either valve cover will prevent 100% of the oil as in my previous x2 setup but the smell, **** that smell.
I believe manufacturers may want some oil coming back into the cylinders. If they saw this as being problematic, they would've stopped it. Tight tolerances might favor rings being lubricated topside. Without the pcv recirculating, my mileage went down. No power difference noticeable either way.

My catch can has been on the car for 56K miles and has had no effect on OC. I've bypassed it several times over the years for a couple thousand miles each time for comparison and still no difference.

So...you're saying that the oil consumption is the same with or without? It's not catching oil? Sounds like a piece. My mini mishi kicks some decent ***. Paid $110 for it iirc.

Yep that's what we're saying. OC with these engines is through the rings. If someone is burning a quart every thousand miles, are you dumping a quart out of your catch can? Of course not. The amount that you will catch in your can is a pittance relative to what people that have the serious OC issues are losing. The catch can keeps your plenum cleaner and helps keep some of the emission system blow-by from getting into the fuel mixture. The big oil loss is direct injection into the cylinder as it moves past the rings from the crankcase.

Oh. Yeah, I don't have those issues so I cannot relate. Thought we were talking about a typical VQ. A quart every 1k miles is WAY TOO MUCH. I'd hit that engine with a 250 shot right off the line, wrap it around a tree and go get something that doesn't use more oil than gas. I suppose that's not funny to those who have this issue and of this magnitude.
I started by addressing the op's ? and now we're talking about engines that belong in a bone yard. WTF? Think op has abandoned his thread. For those without a lemon VQ, my protocol and suggestions are solid.

Before blowing my oil eating engine up in fantastic fashion with a large dose of n2o, I'd probably start dumping in **** like this and if this product didn't work, I'd try a few more like it.

Something else that's very relevant for increasing the life of a motor is installing an oil pan spacer, adds an extra .75 qt of oil to the crankcase and is cheap and easy to install. I think the Z1 Motorsports one is less than $75.
