2007 G35 Clicking/ Tapping Noise over 50 mph

My G35 has 213,000 miles on it. I recently had a humming noise while driving from the front end; the mechanic told me it was the wheel hub assembly and bearings so I had them replaced. that noise has resolved but now I have a clicking/ tapping/ knocking noise that is only present when i get to 50-55 mph, the car seems to run fine even when the noise is there. It does not only happen when i turn, it is there when I am going straight. I have checked the oil level and it is normal. Anyone have any ideas?

Does the tapping appear to be related to engine rpm or to vehicle speed. You can easily determine which by reving the engine slowly through the rpm's while in park. You can also get the vehicle to speed where it's making the sound and then let off the throttle and shift into neutral to drop rpm's.

If the sound is related to vehicle speed I would lift and support the vehicle and spin each tire by hand to make sure everything feels good, also inspect for any debris like tumbleweeds that may be stuck under the chassis, also check to make sure all the bolts are properly installed in the engine undershroud to rule out anything flapping around making noise.

If the sound is related to engine rpm I would check the spark plugs (or replace if they have more than 40k miles on them), you may be hearing engine predetonation (pinging). It sounds sort of like someone shaking an aerosol can of paint, that clackety sound of the ball bearing mixing the paint can. You might also be hearing valve noise or timing chain noise. You might also be hearing a fuel pressure damper failing (it's more of a "thumping" sound in the cabin).

Most of the engine related sounds can be diagnosed with a mechanics stethoscope.

Try to figure out where exactly the noise is coming from, I'm just assuming you are hearing the noise from the front of the vehicle somewhere.

Thanks for the reply. The noise is definitely related to speed and not RPM. Revving the engine in park does not reproduce the noise. When the speed gets to 55 - 60 mph the noise starts. When I put it in neutral the sound remains until the speed goes below 55 mph. It is like a tapping and squeaking combined. I have a video with the noise if I can get it to upload. I will reply to this thread with the video if I can get it to work. Thanks for your help

I don't think the video posted. Put it on YouTube then post the link and it will automatically embed the video.

Yeah I can definitely hear it, I'd take it back to the mechanic and have him take a look, I think it's something flapping around under the car but that's just a guess.

Is there any vibration with it?

G35 Coupe. Plenum spacer, k&n filter, z tube. Muffler delete.
I know this may sound far fetched, but be sure that all your wheels are secure to the hubs. I have sounds that get louder over time all because my lug nuts are loosening. Mech may not have tightened them properly.

This is just a suggestion that you could check on easily. I usually lift wheels to see if they shake or have any play. There should be no play at all since you have brand new hubs.

The front end of course is not stopped by anything so check one side at a time while leaving the other front wheel down. The rears can be checked the same way but you can lift both at the same time if you'd like.

But seeing that you must be in motion to hear this, I feel as if it's pertaining to the rotation of the wheels. But you say you don't feel vibration which is why this suggestion is far-fetched.

Sounds like something is loose. Id have the mechanic double check the work. Whered you get your wheel bearings from?

Are the brake shields bent or loose?
