Question Tipping for gas in NJ

I guess because I have been in the hospitality business all my life, I have this urge to tip the guy pumping the gas.
I also think (probably wrong) if I use the same gas station all the time, the guy will be more careful with my car if I give him a buck.

Do you or don't you tip the gas station attendant?

(NJ is one of two states that forbids self service)

I also tip whenever possible since I was also in a previous position where tips accounted for a certain percentage of my pay.

But as far as gas attendant no I dont tip them since their salary doesn't account for tips. If I had the choice of pumping my own gas I would instead of waiting for a undetermined time for them to free up and pump the gas for me when it would be easier and faster to pump my own gas.

I actually hate the fact that I cannot pump my own gas in NJ, those dudes leave finger print marks and scratches all over my car splilling excess gasoline on my fender. I hate it! no tip here, the only tip they might get is from my fist going in their face when I catch them messing up my ride.

When I drive up the turnpike, I don't care what they say. If I need gas, I pump it myself. I don't want a careless attendant anywhere near my car. They would probably scratch it. No one gives a damn about your car. I have never been given me a hard time about it. I'm 6' 2" and weight about 270 and I am not fat. I just try to avoid having to get gas in NJ or CT (too expensive) on my way to NH.

Tipping.......wtf......tip myself!

Here in Ca. there are very few service stations left
where they'll pump the gas for ya, and besides I'm
perfectly capable as is my wife.

Dude, I don't think I could live in a place where someone else pumped my gas. Seriously, don't you guys **** when they come wandering up to your car with their big metal tool of doom?

Tipping used to be more common, but so was cleaning your windows and checking oil. I think I might have tipped the guy a few times, in the last 10 years, but now with almost everyone using their credit cards I don't think it happens too often. I earn 5% on gas purchases with my credit card, so it would be stupid for me to pay cash, since I don't get anything back.

Most of the gas attendants where I live are college students earning money for tuition.
