First Oil Change

When should you do your first oil change? Some people say 1,000 miles and some say 3,000 and others say 3,750. Which one is right?

Re: First Oil Change

My 04 sedan is 3 weeks old with 1300 miles. I tried to get in this Sat for an oil change but had to settle for next Sat. Should have about 1800 on it by then. It is all personal preference. My sales person said I didn't need to get one until the 3750 mile mark. Maybe it's just me but 30 bucks is cheap piece of mind. I'll do the 2nd at aprox 3750 and continue with the regular intervals after that.

Re: First Oil Change

I agree. I'm a believer in frequent oil changes for a new engine. I had my first one done at 1500 miles and will do another at the 3750 mileage. It can't hurt.

Re: First Oil Change

I had an oil change right after break in. It can't hurt anything to do it. I was then doing it every 3750. My last oil change I put in synthetic blend (dumb@$$ me, picked up the wrong kind) so I'll probably wait till 4000 - 4500. After that it's pure synthetic and I'll probably stretch each oil change to 5000 or so.

Re: First Oil Change

I did mine @ 1800mi, switched to full synthetic. Used the dealer-- I didn't want to take off 14 bolts in 20 degree weather. It cost me $80. I'll do it myself from now on thanks to the excellent oil change post.

Re: First Oil Change

80 BUCKS ??? What oil did you use and how much was the dealer charge just for the oil change not including the synthetic oil? The Mobil 1 I've been using in my truck for 8 years is about $30 for case of 6 and the Chevy dealer charged me about $18 to do the change.

Smithtown Infiniti. I believe they charged $8/qt. I know it's way too high but the weather was not suitable for me to do it for the first time. Will from now on.

Re: First Oil Change

i've read and seen reports where they say 6000 - 7000 for oil change is sufficient. sure, garages say 1/2 that as they get extra business, but because of developments in the quality of oil and engine building.... you only need to stick to official requirements, unless you drive super hard.
