Tinted Tail Lights -- > Legal? (NJ)

Anyone know the law or where to find the laws on Tinted tail lights?

I am curious if DMV would fail me if I put on BlueBat covers on my tail lights.

Thank you in advance!!!

They're not legal anywhere.

This looks like your State's statute

39:3-47 Illuminating devices required; violations, fines.
c.No person shall alter the equipment or performance of equipment of any vehicle which has been approved at an official inspection station designated by the commission with intent to defeat the purpose of such inspection, and no person shall drive or use any vehicle with equipment so altered.

Thank you for the reply sir!

That is what is misleading here... as *I* read the statute, I find that it is incomplete and that there is no way they can enforce this if I can show the same luminosity, etc...

However, I think too mechanically... I'd be a horrible lawyer.

So it looks like the short version is:
Get the inspection first, then put the bluebats on?

Curious if anyone has actually tried to get a car inspected here with overlays on... I was looking to put on the ones with cut-outs for the lights, just overlaying the non-illuminating portions.

If you put tint over the light, you don't think the light output is diminished?

Also, you can't cover the reflectors that are built into the taillights under US DOT regs.

I put on bats overlays with the tail cut outs. I have yet to be pulled over with it and cops always are looking at me. I wouldnt know about inspection jersey is always trying to fail people they have to many drivers as it is. Bats have the reflector cutouts atleast the ones i have. The all around overlay with no cutouts is definately illegal.

I have ones similar to these, I think with the reverse lights cut out too... I think to be safe I'll inspect it prior to installing... I was just curious if they can legally say / justify failing me if the visibility of the light is not compromised at all...

I have my tails tinted and they're completely covered and I have yet to be pulled over for it or harrassed for it. My dad's a cop/dectective and when I had it done he said I'd probably get harrassed for it but I've had it on for about a year a half and still nothing =)

Oh and I went through inspection with it and passed obviously lol..
