Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Sides

hey GYal8er
me and a buddy built the box, it was our first time working with Fiberglass. Here is a link to pics we took during the build up. Materials cost me around 300.
I plan on doing a DIY writeup when i get some time.

If anyone on the area needs some help starting something like this , let me know. Ill be more than happy to help you out with it.

Did you paint the enclosure yourself?

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Si

So it was you at the gas station... I was talking to Carmine bout it... I was like "there was some car from the Forum at the gas station, debaged." Couldnt fgure who it was.

The wrap was for 2 reasons

1) Everything was painted Thursday Night, So anything touchs it and its gunna chip off.

2)On the way home we werent exactly going the speed limit

I was rolling with the White G, Yellow m3 and the Ultimate G35 Killer, the Turbo Civic that was next to me at the Gas Station.

Oh and Sal the box was painted with the front , sides and rear by my body shop.

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Si

Yeah I figured you weren't going the speed limit.. slower right?

Mike (UT) had his bumper all taped up too... and his tape was flying off of the car and was getting stuck on my car.. lol

I saw all of the cars you were rollin' with. A nice crew you had together. I met up with the UT guys down the road and I think you guys passed by us revvin' your engines. We were pulled over on the side of the road.

It was good fun.. this needs to happen more often

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Si

yea that was me reving... I saw mikes coupe from a distance and gave him a good ole redline hello He was telling me something happend to someones bumper? It wasnt you was it?? Where you at Burger King with Mike and the Crew?

And we were going much much slower than the posted limit

The funniest thing about the way home, my boy in the white coupe passed mike and assumed it was me. He tought he was leading the pack and couldnt figure how I passed him

Mikes car is like my cars evil twin brother. At night you cant tell em apart

I cant wait for another drive like that it was a blast going home.

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Sides

Yo... I saw your setup at HIN and it was pretty tight!! My friend sent me a link as well on how to make a custom Fiberglass subwoofer box as well...

How much time in all did it take you to make that custom enclosure box? That's probably my next mod project...a true DIY... I'm looking into a side custom box with 10" JL Audio woofer. I'd like to keep the stock head unit and just add a little kick to my HipHop and House selection...

Oh... did you add Dynamat to dampen the rattling? Or just turn it up to the point where the bass is louder than the rattling?? lol

Great setup!

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Sides

dude the bass is always louder than the rattle These W3-V2's 10" JL's POUND...im running em off the stock HU as well with POS LOC's works fine. The JL Amp is monster too for its size and never even gets warm. I gotta turn the bass up a lil once I dynamat it. Like ive said before if anyone wants help on starting up a FG box let me know. If your in the area even better.

Me and a buddy spent about 5 weeks doing this figuring 3 nights a week for 6 hours or so a night. So about 90 hours of work. But this is also the first time I ever worked with FG.

How much was the JL 10" and the JL Amp?
Might be interested in a set depending on prices...

btw... ain't fiberglass a biatcH to work with because it itches your skin?? I'd be in long sleeves for sure!

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Sides

I got the subs from a friend and the amp from China Town... Paid 350 on the amp and 200 for both subs... And yes I am a like off in the head to spend 90 hrs on this [censored], but i love the look and its done Fiberglass is itchy to some people but it doesnt bother me one bit... the resin is the worst. If you notice in some of the pics I have my arms shaved... F-ing resin dropped all over my arms when I was working on the roof of the trunk.... Its growing back now

Re: Pics of my Custom FiberGlass Box and Greddy Si

damn sorry to hear bout the arms.

And FB isn't that bad.. there are a few pointers I can give though.

Rip/cut SMALL squares, less likely to create air pockets that way. Takes longer, but higher quality. Air pockets weaken the structure, and can look like [censored].

Wear GLOVES. I'm talking about the rubber/latex/whatever 100 for 5 bucks at lowes gloves.

I only dropped like 1 or two small drops of resin on my arms, and one or two on my legs, it's not too bad, don't worry about it. Just be careful, and buy a cheap plastic mixing cup from lowes/homedepot to do this work in. Don't use those red cheap *** plastic cups that all the frat parties use for bear. Resin can eat those things away, and before you know it, you have a puddle of resin on the driveway (shh!, my landlord hasn't noticed)

Layer it up, and patience. I did like 7 layers, it's strong as my nuts. Which is a good thing.

FB itself never itched me... Only my hand touched it, and that way rare.. I usually had gloves on.

If you cut/sand the stuff though, wear LONG SLEEVES, long pants, dust particle mask (NOT respirator), goggles, all that good stuff. When it gets cut/sanded fine particles go into the air, and that's a bitch. Not like it'll be hard to wear long clothing now... but when I did my enclosure, it was like 90 degrees outside, and that sucked.

That brings me to my next subject, don't do this when it's cold unless you have a LOT of patience... takes forever to dry. And I wouldn't suggest overcompensating by adding tons of hardener, I *think* it makes the structure weaker if too much hardener.

And while working with resin, wear a good respirator (phat, if you need to borrow, I got), they're like $35 or so.

I needed to make two sub enclosures (my first time working with FB, and where I made my enclosure was a bit harder to work with than where most enclosures are). Overall it was fun, and if you got two people working on it, MUCH easier... you can have one person cut small squares while the other sits there with a cheap brush applying the resin to the squares. I did it by myself, and it gets a little harder, and you get lazy and stop wanting to use such small squares.

Hell, babiephat, if you want to make one, call me up one weekend, I kinda feel like starting another FB project.

One thing I always wanted to learn was how to make those molds that the pros use.. supposedly after you make those (which is expensive and hard), each copy afterwards is cake.

I'm sure this mold method is how those 4080 or whatever made those enclosures.
