roads in NYC suck!!!

are there any roads in nyc that are not filled with potholes. i live in bayside queens and even on residential streets there are potholes. the LIE and BQE which i take all the time are a mess. i wanna just step on the gas and cruise and not have to have my foot over the brake anticipating a pothole coming up soon. all i do when i drive now is look down at the road and swerve my car in and out to avoid them. then i come home and check out my front bumper and i cry. cry on the inside that is.

dont get me wrong i love NYC but the roads here suck!

some places ive come across where you should try to avoid.

northern blvd in flushing
college point blvd (absolute worst!!!)
BQE
Chinatown!
Soho!

i experienced college point blvd firsthand yesterday... and i concur, it's pretty bad.

i think one of the worst stretches i've hit so far is the BQE right after you merge on from the LIE... i swore i was gonna break something

I really feel sorry for you guys. I was in NYC two weeks ago visiting, and i could not believe the amount of potholes out there. I thought our roads here in L.A. were bad. But you guys have it bad! WTF. Why is it that way? I would not even dare to drive my G if i lived out there with those kinds of road conditions.

If i lived out there, i would not invest in an expensive car.

They are bad-and don't forget the Cross Bronx Expressway.

Part of the problem comes from the ice and freeze and thaw cycles and road salt, problems that LA don't have. I guess they are hard to repair because the repairs are so disruptive to driving too.

I'd like to think that the money not spent on repairing roads is helping with public transportation. Maybe there is a better surfacing material for roads, or a better base layer that doesn't sink and crack?

OMG, another member with aftermarket 18"s???? You me and XCELR8 must be like the only 3 members that don't have 19"+ rims. I have cousins in Brooklyn and have been on the BQE and I can attest to the NYC roads. Thankfully we took my wife's Jeep Grand Cherokee, and yeah, the suspension got a workout. Couldn't imagine driving my G on it. But Cleveland can't be far behind. What I especially love are those 1" thick solid steel road plates that crews put down to cover the big holes in the roads. Those seem to be in vogue around here in Cleveland now. I just love going over those things. Just ordered my wheels yesterday. Yep 18"s and proud of it.

All because the city uses so much damn salt throughout the winter!! As the winter goes on, if they haven't used that much salt, they find any excuse to dump it otherwise they won't get the same budget to spend on salt the next year. this then creates a huge freeze/thaw thang that chews up the road really bad. On top of that, NYC fails to buy real plow trucks. They use the huge garbage trucks with chains on the wheels, causing more damage!! The funniest part of all this is when manholes explode (very big in the spring). The salt that washes underground over the winter erodes wires etc and eventually sparks some built up gas. Then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, huge **** heavy manhole goes flying 10-15ft in the air! Sounds like some serious firepower! And you don't wanna be around one when it does blow! It can easily take a head off!

Agreed with the salt. Tons here in NE Ohio. One day I saw a truck so overfilled with Salt that it took a left turn at a light and about 200 lbs. spilled over on to the intersection. Classic. That's my taxes right there on the street.

I love the "if we don't spend it all, we lose it mentality" of the government! If any ran their own business like the government, they wouldn't last more then a year!! Unreal!

In the bayside area, if you already don't know the Cross Island is probably one of the best roads, not many cops on the road either. Also, if you want to head to long island you would definitely find nice highways there. Wantagh Parkway, LIE (very east). Potholes suck, FDR is the worst road i go through to go to school (I commute to Manahattan). Good luck.
