I just got accepted to Berkeley University and will be attending the school starting next year Spring semester (January 2008)

** Congrats! Get ready to be going thru a culture shock. Are you Asian? I'm Asian and I went thru a culture shock when I moved up here. You'll be seeing A LOT of faces similar to ours. I grew up in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood & school. Most of the time, I would be the only Asian in my group. Not saying it's bad, just saying you'll be going thru some culture adjustment.

I was just wondering if you guys could provide me some info about the area..

how's the neighborhood around Berkeley?

** The neighborhood is not good, but not bad either. Expect to see a lot of people wearing white socks & Birkenstocks, khaki pants, and light jackets. If you're thinking of bringing your G up here and parking it anywhere in the vicinity of the campus, expect someone to side-swipe you, scratch your car or ding your car within the first 1 month. A lot of Northern Cali people don't care about their cars, they surely won't care about yours.

how much will it cost me to get an apartment?

** You think gas is expensive? Apartments here are MUCH MORE expensive times 50.

(one room or Studio with parking spot)

** parking spot out somewhere within a 5 block area of where you live if you get there in a certain time.

(is there any place that you guys recommend?)

** stay at the dormitories.

how's the weather throughout the year?

** You need to learn to wear clothing in LAYERS. One minute you're the next minute, you're and this is all within a 10 to 15 minute time frame or if you go from Berkeley to Castro Valley (town nearby), the difference in temperature means removing or adding clothing.

(I'm trying to get a convertible car, but it won't be worthy it if it's cold 24/7)

** it's not cold here all the time. I learned that summers here in Northern Cali are in September thru late October. Seems like Halloween is the cut off time and that's when it gets cool. From April thru Labor day weekend, you'll need a sweater and the closer you get to the water, you'll need a jacket by then. That's the average. There have been some freak weather were it was 70 degrees in San Francisco in June. That's not normal. January thru late March, it can get to the low 20s at night. Bring wool socks and wear them in layers too. The air is much more humid up here too, which is a plus.

how's the road? cuz it's very crapy in Los Angeles

** the roads here are WORST! Berkeley and Oakland are not known for their good, paved roads. Seriously, I was in L.A. this past Christmas and I LOVED the roads down there. Unless Berkeley has re-paved their roads in the last 3 months, their roads are not so good. Remember, the earth moves up here much more than down there so the roads buckle more.

and is there something that I should know before I get there?

** Expect things to be more expensive here.

Much cooler weather on months that you expect it to be warm, people
are just as cold as the weather - well, most of them.

If you are sick, don't expect people to come to your door wondering if
you're still alive - most of them don't care unless you dangle $$$ in front
of them.

They don't have the same entertainment places up here as they do down
there.

Most Northern Cali people are not good drivers. A lot of people drive
farther apart here, so be patient. Some brake about 2 miles away from the
car in front of them. Lately, I've been seeing some brake 2 inches from
the car in front of them and end up hitting them

Learn to look for ONE-WAY street signs very quickly.

Learn to walk a lot more

Get on your computer and learn to use BART. That's their public
transportation up here that connects East Bay to SF. Don't bring your car
to SF unless you want to get rear ended, get hit, get dinged or get towed
or whatever else you can think of unless you don't really care about your
car's appearance. I have an old beat up Camry that I only use when I'm
going to SF.

East Bay is East of San Francisco, however, West of East Bay, below San
Francisco is called the Peninsula, not the West Bay. Did that sound
confusing?

There are hardly any CHPs or cops around, at least not as much as LA

There are better Chinese restaurants up here

Keep one driver's license with your home address so you can still get that
discount to Disneyland, Magic Mtn & Knotts Berry Farm.

People here don't know how to allow people to cross the street, so be
careful when you're crossing the streets up here. Unlike L.A. where the
person crossing the street may be related to a gang member and you may
end up getting shot if you don't allow them plenty of room to cross the
street, people here run you over while you have complete right of way
crossing the street and pretend they don't know how to speak English
after the cops catches them 10 blocks away.

A lot of people here don't know the meaning of "slower traffic keep right".
They think it's to the right of that sign... so, be prepared to see someone
driving 50mph on the fast lane and 85mph on the slow lane. A lot of
people have "paid" for their drivers license here rather than earning it, so
you'll see a lot of people who don't know road rules. And people here pass
from the right side of you, not the left side like the rest of the world.

They don't have as many variety of radio stations here, so fill up on your
iPod or get Sirius. And the radio stations that we do have up here sucks!

The sun is warmer up here when it does come out. There's hardly any
smog to filter the sun.

If you expect Northern Cali to be slower... you're about 12 years too late.
We're faster up here now, IMO than L.A. Seriously, people here don't
know how to treat pedestrians. Be careful when crossing the street
whether you're in San Francisco, Berkeley, Silicon Valley or San Mateo.
You DON'T have the right of way anytime or anywhere even if there's a
cop walking next to you... people here will run you over or stop within
inches from you. Didn't I say this already? LOL

A lot of people here are not as caring about their appearance as they do
down South. I'm not talking about silicon breast and teeth whitening
stuff, but everyday apprearance like taking showers and brushing teeth,
putting on deodorant or combing their hair. You know, daily care of
themselves.

I'm just kind of worry because I'm pretty much starting off a new life by
myself..so I'll really appreciate if you guys provide me some info.
thanks for reading this and hope to meet you guys even though
I might not be driving a G
thanks again and have one nice day!

Hi there!

Okay, being raised in L.A. (Thousand Oaks area), now living here in Northern Cali...I've answered some of your questions above.

One tip, Northern Cali people are NOT as friendly as us SoCal people. I know I'll be getting a lot of critics about my post because the truth hurts, but from SoCal girl at heart to another SoCal person moving up here, these two places cannot be anymore different. If you need help or have any questions, PM me.

Lastly, drive a POC on the outside, great on the inside. That way, nobody would park or drive near you and if they ding your car, you won't notice it. And you won't get carjacked.

Welcome to Northern Cali!

OMG, "Norcal people NOT as friendly as Socal people?"

That's not the case in my experience. I think Norcal people are MUCH more friendly and laid back in general because of the diversity up here whereas in LA, the majority of people seem to stick to "their own" and I got the impression that LA people are much more materialistic in general.

But I will give LA one thing, there are SO many HOT girls in LA.

Original Poster, are you Korean? I ask because your SN.

Anyong Haseyo Welcome to the Bay Area, SeoulG35.

I agreed with Chris. NorCal people are MUCH friendlier than SoCal.

Haters and criminals are everywhere no matter where you live.

My suggestion to you is stay cool, respect others and drive safely

Depending on what you want, an apartment could cost you anywhere from $800-$1500 or so. More if you want luxury. Craigslist should be your main resource. I rent a 2 bed house for $1825.

Weather is great as well. It's why we pay the big bucks. Summer has been around for awhile, temps from 70-80. Minimal rain this year. Convertibles are perfect, although not as great as I'd imagine LA to be.

Hope that helps.

Quick edit: I'm a resident of Berkeley -- not in the school.

ouach, at that price u should have gotten a house or a town home bc all that money to rent goes down the drain.
