(07-24) 08:55 PDT SAN JOSE -- Four people died in San Jose Monday night when a teen driver lost control of his sports car, struck two pedestrians and then ran into two trees, police said today.

All four died at the scene of the crash on Graystone Lane.

Authorities said pedestrians Inder Paul Batra, 65, and his wife, Uma Batra, 57, were either walking or standing on the dirt shoulder of the road in Almaden Valley when they were struck at about 8:20 p.m. Driver Erik James Satterstom, 19, and passenger Maxwell James Harding, 18, both of San Jose, also were killed, police said.

"Witnesses said they were going 80 mph," said California Highway Patrol officer Tod Thibodeau. "It's a two-lane road, with double yellow lines -- the speed limit is 35 mph."

Thibodeau said Satterstom was driving his 2003 Nissan 350Z westbound on the road when he lost control of the vehicle and veered into eastbound traffic and then back into the westbound lane. The car continued to veer out of control onto the right shoulder, where it hit the Batras. The vehicle then struck two trees, Thibodeau said.

"I don't know if he was an inexperienced driver, but it looks like a fast car with an inexperienced driver," Thibodeau said.

A nearby resident, Wes Chan, said Monday night that he heard what he described as a "very loud crash" as he was preparing to have dinner. He rushed over to see if he could help.

"The driver's side was really smashed in -- the front wheel was 20 yards in one direction, and the fender was 20 yards in another direction," he said.

Chan said there is a sharp bend in the road near where the crash occurred.

Thibodeau said the cause of the accident is under investigation. There was an "overwhelming smell of gasoline that would have masked the smell of alcohol," if the driver had been drinking, he added.
