what's the loma prieta?

The Loma Prieta earthquake was the big one that happened in 1989. You know, the one that brought down part of the Bay Bridge, leveled part of the Marina due to liquefaction, and brought down part of the Cypress structure in the East Bay.

If you were here during all that you'd never forget it.

It was a strange day. Oakland was about to play San Francisco in the World Series so everyone was at home getting ready for the game. Can you imagine what that day would've have been like if there would have been rush hour traffic on the Bay Bridge and on the Cypress Structure? It was the best timing for a big earthquake.

I was at a wedding rehearsal. The church shook like it was made out of cardboard. Everyone ran out leaving an old lady sitting in a pew. I felt so bad leaving her there so I just stayed with her because she was obviously scared. This old church had those giant diamond chandeliers that look like they weigh a ton and have the sharp metalic points. I remember looking up and watching them swing back and forth, waiting for the chains to snap.

After it stopped, everyone started laughing until a guy on his little portable tv (he had it for the game) told us that the bridge had collapsed. That made everyone somber again.

Man, you don't see earthquake coming like you can a storm. Earthquakes just start and end like someone hitting a switch. A 6.0 is 10 times more powerful than a 5.0, a 7.0 is 100 times more than a 5.0, and so on. It's just crazy to think about the power an earthquake can unleash.

Anyhow, ya, earthquake can suck.

^I was at work....part time, Orchard Supply Hardware...watering some plants in the nursery.

I was alone, I remember everything got quiet and then a hum, like someone put their hands over my ears. Once I realized what was going on, I stepped up on a bench and looked over at some pipes that were hanging from chains, plants hanging from the pipes, they started to sway more and more..I then looked out the large windows looking out towards the street and started watching the streets wave up and down...still the hum continued. Then it all just stopped.

I remember being very concerned because my father was taking BART that week from Oakland and we had no way of getting a hold of him (no one had cell phones back then...not us anyways). It was a long couple of hours waiting for him to get home and me to get the call at work to make sure he was back okay. Thats the less detailed version of what I remember.

"Anyhow, ya, earthquake can suck."

Ok, that was scary as all hell.

Big rumble followed by 10-20 seconds of waves....

I don't like SF anymore.

We felt the quake down south in Monterey. The house was shaking pretty good.

DUDE ok.... i was sittin in my car n right when i started my car the earthquake hits... n car was shakin it felt like it was bogging strugglin tryin to run. Im like WUT THE HELL? i really thought it was my car and then soon heard on the radio it was an earthquake.. haha............

Loma Prieta... remember it all to well.
I'm lucky to be here, being we had just moved from Alameda to Oakland that week-end and I worked in Berkeley; always took the 880 to/frm home.
That day I was going home from work to our new house, just took the 580 instead of 880 from Berkeley.
I heard this boom boom boom, thought it was truck tires exploding or something, my car was all over the 580 with everyone else...wtf!!
Later found out it was the cypress collapsing. I would've been on top of the cypress at that time.
Wife and I lost 5 acquaintances from our church in Alameda we knew from the Cypress collapse.
I was a photo technician back then and printed many pictures for Cal Trans and Coast Guard of bay bridge and cypress collapse.
Pictures inside the cypress were horrifying, disturbing and in color.
If it weren't for the world series with most ppl at the game, there would've been the usual stop n go traffic on the cypress going toward the city
with many many many more fatalities that day.
My higher power was watching out for me that day, I count my blessings I'm still here to remember that terrible day.
