Unfortunately, You won't be able to buy earthquake insurance 30 days after a significant one hits (or maybe 45 days) and when you do get one, it's quiet expensive and you'd have a 10% deductible. When my parents house jumped 6 inches from its foundation during the Northridge earthquake, the damage came up to $290K (this was in 1994) and my parents had to pay $29,000 for deductible so the work could be started. FYI.

I thought earthquake home insurance was standard does that mean you gotta pay extra for fire and flood insurance too?

I don't know exactly how much extra im paying since my wife takes care of the finances for me, but we're paying extra for ash, flooding, and volcano insurance on our home and our rental. I believe fire is tied into the original plan..

homeowner's policy covers fire, belongings and liability. if you want flood and earthquake, that's extra.

ggirl is correct. earthquake insurance is very expensive and imo not worth it.

^^^correct. + depends on carrier, seen it at 15% deduct.

Correct on not getting eq coverage for x amount of days after and also any quake more than 3.0 or 3.5 in area. forget which one.

+10 on earthquake kit . Have had one for many years. Those bloody Brits...lol

Glad to hear no family got hurt in Northridge one. It was a fault they didn't know about until then.
Couldn't contact my family down there when it happened. Saw all this destruction on tv around where family lived so got first flight out.
Luckily, all was okay with family and house. Weird, like the EQ missed Burbank for some reason and Burb/Pasadena Airport not affected, thank goodness.

So I come out to Vegas and everyone is calling me telling me there was a quake back home. Seems like no damage to my home/belongings. Will have to check it out when I get back.
