LMAO . . . Jen, you are too funny!

If I knew anything about computers and why they act up, I would help you, but sadly enough, I don't.

Hopefully, some one can help you out with this problem. Good luck to you!

If I A) had access to your computer and B) knew Vista as well as I know XP, then I'd also be able to help. I recommend that you bring your laptop with you on sunday with the charger and I'll take a look at it then. In the meantime, you should get AVG Anti-Virus: it's available online for free, and it's award-winningly good

EDIT: here's the link for it. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download.../frt/0?prd=aff

You should also get Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE (also free) and Spybot Search & Destroy (also free)
* Lavasoft: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-200...dlpid=10045910
* Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html

Try to select this Open folder to view file
and insert the CDROM
check to see if the Windows Explorer opens automatically

Andy's idea was my first thought, but it should still offer you the ability to do other things regardless of the default. Try uninstalling the drive using the Device Manager and then refreshing the device list - Vista will automatically detect and "reinstall" your DVD-RW and you can check if it works then.

Yes, try Nathan's steps. It could be that the DVD-ROM driver is corrupted.

To reach the Device Manager, either navigate to System, Control Panel, the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager or just run the following command: devmgmt.msc

Then select your DVD/CD-ROM drive, right-click on it, Uninstall it, then right click on any other item and select "Scan for hardware changes"

If you use Comcast as your ISP, you will get a free McAfee Security Center for FREE (1 year). Just logon to your Comcast account and click on the Security (from top right corner of the screen). You should see the promotion.

^ Andy's suggestion is great, however I would still use AVG. It's very unobtrusive and offers great protection. Best of all, it is free, as are the two Anti-Spyware programs that I linked you to.

when you click "Scan for hardware changes" Vista will automatically detect that there is a drive installed and automatically reinstall the necessary drivers
