Home Improvements

This is some what off topic, but I need the help of the Nor Cal guys. I just closed on my new home last week, but I have some improvements that need to be done. Right now, my focus is having shutters installed for a majority of the windows.

My group helped put Hunter Douglas into their building they just purchased late last year, but I have not had a chance to ask them about pricing. A co-worker recommended going to Costco.

I wanted to see if any of the members here have had shutters done and where they purchased them from. Also, did you have someone install them (i.e. contractor, Lowes, Home Depot, Costco, etc.) or was this a do-it-yourself project?

I appreciate any responses and help.

Thanks!

No, Chris, you are correct. Rob (rwcblkcoupe) posted something about offering a deal on window coverings to the NorCal G community.

Would could Mimi blinds they offer some nice shutters, though I don't know there cost. Also I would suggest the company that you go with to do the install that they they will cover any damage from the install.

I've used San Francisco Shutter Company, they are in South SF. I've had a friend that used Mimi Blinds, I don't know if they are that much cheaper than SF Shutter, but the fit, finish and overall construction was a lot cheaper/flimsier looking.

you can go to home depot and buy them yourself thay are around 37 to 45 for a pair. then you buy the push clips that hold them up. 5.00 for a bag of like 20. then you get a friend or wife to hold it where you want it. drill a hole threw the shutter into the side of the house push the clip in and your done. you can use 4 clips or 6 for a little extra.

I would definitely recommend that. I had Home Depot replace my roof once and they bent the **** out of my gutters and claimed they didn't do it. Never ever will I have them do work for me again.

^Places like Home Depot actually contract the work out. It's never actual Home Depot employees that do the work.

I'm a do it yourself type person when it comes to home remodeling if I feel comfortable enough doing the work. Something like installing shutters really isnt that difficult.

I noticed that when they arrived. And you're right Chris, if you want it done right it's best to do it yourself.

Window coverings take time, but can be a DIY for sure. They are not cheap, especially when buying for a whole house, so any chance you can get to save some money is a great idea. If you're somewhat handy, it can be done. Costco, Home Depot, etc, the install will be hit and miss because like someone said they contract it out to random laborers I think. If you go with a company like Hunter, their quality will be much better is it is their own employees and the focus of their job.

DIY would be my vote though to save money and make sure you get it done how you want it.
