Exclamation Official Sacramento Area Twisties (SATs) Meet

This is official Sacramento Area Twisties (SATs) information post. We are planning on holding a monthly meet to go up into the local foothills between Auburn and Placerville and drive on the twisty roads up there. Each month we will decide on the route and give a diffuculty rating to each part. The routes, difficulty, and run times will be different each month. We will use the polling system to determine what most people want.

Have a look below for the descriptions, and map information of each route. These routes can be connected for longer and more advanced drives or for shorter easier drives. The videos associated with the route infomation is a highlight of each run, showing some of the turns and speeds at which they can be taken.

RULES
I know we probably don't need to make them, but since some of these routes require a lot of attention and little room for error, we would like to make sure everyone stays SAFE and drives with care and the ability they feel comfortable with. This is NOT A RACE or RALLY, but a place to take your car out and get to know the road and enjoy the thrills of your suspension.

We want to keep the groups small and intimate so please make sure to sign up in advanced and if we get a lot of drivers on one day we will split up the routes into two staging areas, One for the basic leisurly drive, and the other for advanced and/or longer drives.

I have never been to an event where someone from this forum has been a jackass or caused any problems by showing off and I think that will continue with these drives. So instead of making a list of what not to do, just DO one thing - be safe-

See below for routes:

Route: Salmon Falls Rd
Start: Hwy 50 at El Dorado Hills
End: Junction of Salmon Falls Rd and Hwy 49
Difficulty: Moderate
Avg Time: 30 Minutes
Link:
Description: Starting out at the El Dorado Hills Blvd exit from Hwy 50, you’ll head north through town with traffic. Once you pass the intersection of Green Valley Rd, the road changes from El Dorado Hills Blvd to Salmon Falls Rd… like a switch, this is where the fun begins. There are mild directional changes that can be taken with varying speeds. Beautiful scenery greets you with different views of equestrian ranches to gorges and quarries. The end of this road meets up with Hwy 49, where the choice is to proceed north on 49 towards Auburn or south towards Placerville.

Route: Hwy 49 North
Start: Northbound Hwy 49 at Salmon Falls Rd
End: Cool
Difficulty: Easy
Avg Time: 10 Minutes
Link:
Description: Starting at the intersection of Salmon Falls Rd and Hwy 49, this takes you through a couple of tiny towns with good rest stops. There are gas stations and mini marts to recharge your batteries and gas tank if needed. This stretch is littered with cars turning onto and off of Hwy 49 and is fairly straight and flat. If the overall run is planned to be short, take this up and continue north to Auburn at I80.

<a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/?action=view&current=HWY49North.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/HWY49North.jpg" border="0" alt="HWY 49 North"></a>

Route: Hwy 49 Auburn
Start: Cool
End: Auburn
Difficulty: Moderate/Hard (depending on traffic)
Avg Time: 20 Minutes
Link:
Description: Heading north from Cool, this run begins fairly straight and gradually starts curving. After a couple of miles, however, some pretty sharp hairpins show their teeth. While going through the tight turning bits, you’ll have wonderful views of the Auburn State Recreational Area and all the trees and cliffs you can handle. It’s difficult to view the scenery while digging into a 180 hairpin, but there is often plenty of Toyota Priuses to slow your turns to a crawl… allowing you to fully enjoy the views! The end of this run will put you out in Auburn very close to an In ‘n Out burger across from the entrance to I80.

Route: Hwy 49 South
Start: Southbound Hwy 49 at Salmon Falls Rd
End: Gold Hill
Difficulty: Easy
Avg Time: 15 Minutes
Link:
Description: Starting at the intersection of Salmon Falls Rd and Hwy 49, this takes you on a fairly empty stretch of about 8 miles. The area is pretty flat and straight with a limited amount of scenery. The end of this stretch puts you in a historical town called Gold Hill. There are a number a great looking local eateries and shops; great for a quick break.

<a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/?action=view&current=HWY49South.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/HWY49South.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Route: Hwy 49 Placerville
Start: Gold Hill
End: Placerville
Difficulty: Moderate
Avg Time: 20 Minutes
Link:
Description: Leaving Gold Hill, this run starts to make a couple of gentle curves, but soon changes direction pretty with regular frequency. This is a pretty fun stretch of road for the first few miles, but the latter half has many intersections as you start to enter the rural area outside of Placerville. The end of this run will put you fairly close to Hwy 50 or you can hook up with Hwy 193 Northbound for the real fun…

Continued...

Route: Hwy 193 Placerville
Start: Placerville
End: Kelsey
Difficulty: Advanced
Avg Time: 15 Minutes
Link:
Description: An adaptation of an SNL skit can be used here: "That run was delightful. No. No. It was brilliant. No, no, no, no. There is no word to describe its perfection, so I am forced to make one up. And I’m going to do so right now. Scrumtrelescent." Seriously, the most fun you’ll have in a long time. This area has some crazy switchbacks, causing you to be at your most alert and attentive. The sound of tires squealing never felt so good. After the first 2 miles, a quick stop before the bridge crossing the Chili Bar Reservoir will allow you to clean up any bodily fluids accidentally discharged from the shear euphoria you no doubt endured. Can it get better? Yes; after the bridge, you’ll climb up a mini-mountain with a rock wall on your left and a sheer cliff on your right. A massive 180 hairpin (with an expansive turnout) that allows for some decent speed will help you to discard some unwanted rubber. Once over the hill, you’ll wind down with more fun curves finally ending in Kelsey.

Route: Hwy 193 North
Start: Kelsey
End: Georgetown
Difficulty: Easy
Avg Time: 15 Minutes
Link:
Description: Like a good cigarette after sex, this run will let you wind down and get your heart rate back in check. There are very few curves on this stretch of straight land. Ending in Georgetown, you’ll have a chance to pull over for rest and replenishment of fluids and nutrition… and gasoline.

<a href="http://s62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/?action=view&current=Hwy193North.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h84/wezbian/Hwy193North.jpg" border="0" alt="Hwy 193 North"></a>

Route: Hwy 193 Cool
Start: Georgetown
End: Cool
Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
Avg Time: 20 Minutes
Link:
Description: The difficulty for this run is yours for the choosing. Observing posted suggested speeds will allow for a leisurely run, while pushing the actual speed limit will award you with a little more body roll. If you did not stop in Georgetown, you can make pit stops at the end of this run in Cool. From Cool, you can continue north to Auburn as in route “Hwy 49 Auburn” above, or you can head south for a reverse run of Salmon Falls Rd.

This video is the begining of HWY 193 with some video editing to make more people want to join us! CLICK THE VIDEO and on the youtube page, go to "watch in high res" next to the "star rating system"

Nice man, way to put in the work.

I'll try to make as many of these as I can, they are really fun.

As a suggestion if you want to extend some of these runs, HWY 193 continues on the other side of I-80 and has a nice section of twisties. I remember that section from a run we did last year organized by Phil and some others, it was pretty fun and you end up on HWY 65 in Lincoln.

That's another option too, maybe for a shorter run or an end of the day run that takes us to Thunder Valley Casino

You know Rusty works there, he could just go to work at the end of the meet I'm thinking we need to put a sign up list in the 3rd post up there... see who is game and decide which route is first.

Looks like an interesting run... I have no clue how google is calling that a 2hr run (i'm looking at it going from placerville up HWY 50 and around in a biiiig loop back to auburn. The Foresthill - Mosquito ridge looks shorter on the map but is 4hrs long!
