Nam: seriously man! i've been in the library for 4 hrs and it's killing me. i'd rather be in the rain ._.
Chris: thanks, i will repost it soon
. the laptop i'm on has a higher contrast screen so i noticed a bunch of ugly blotches from my earlier edit (there used to be a window there
). as for tripods, i'm using a Manfrotto 728B... found one for $60 used. i think it retails for just over $100 new. rock solid and relatively portable... don't think i'll be upgrading anytime too soon. it's hard to find a decent one for under that. BUT if you're willing to throw down you can get something like Calvin's... something around $300-$500 that's carbon fiber woven, super light, stiff as hell, and can take on various heads (ball head, etc.)
some reputable brands you can look into... (you want the actual model that suits your needs best): Bogen/Manfrotto (probably the most popular), Velbon, Gitzo, Slik
be careful if you look for a used one.. make sure the hinges/***** aren't getting too loose. after years of holding heavy dslr equipment some aren't as solid as they should be.
