Smog is biennial, however if you purchased your car last year then it would make sense since smog for transfer does not apply to the biennial smog requirements for your DMV renewal.

It is every two years in the State unless...

You moved to a larger population or had your license plate # sent to CHP.

Thanks for the reply's. I had to smog last year as well and have not moved and have owned the car since 2005. Not sure why I have to get smog again this year.

Hows this going to work for me since my car is coming from Hawaii. I have test pipes on the car which I know will not pass smog.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
De

Right now my car is in california but has Illinois plates. Would I be able to just keep them on so when cops pull me over I can say that my car is registered in Illinois where it's legal to have them off for example? Also...does anyone know what I need to do to get my registration replaced :P?

I can't do that for long or can I? In order to continue my registration in Hawaii, Safety checks are needed on a yearly basis. I do have a HI PO Box established..

Any workaround?

thanks,
De

that is the issue. many states require annual or bi-annual inspections in order to get new tags. i'd love to register my car with my home address in Texas, but don't feel like driving to El Paso once a year to get inspected

Very strange Wes. Sounds like DMV screwed up (what else is new right lol). I'd call DMV or go there if you have hours to waste (bring a book to read).

I found the DMV in Concord can be easier to get through than the Walnut Creek one.

Probably best to consult the CA DMV website, eh?
