Pics of your grill?
I don't see how messed up it could have gotten by simply sanding it. When I painted mine, it looked like crap until it was finished.
If you could get pics, some people could give input as to whether you actually need a new one.

its sanded to the point where some places you can see the redish chrome finish. and other places its completely off. only thing this grill can be good for is to paint which i might do but last time i painted it, it had chips everywhere.

Might as well paint it.
How did you paint yours? I followed the DIY guide and mine lasted over a year with not a single chip.
IIRC the process was 2-3 layers primer, 4-6 layers paint, 2-3 layers clear coat.

primer will fill anything in had the same issue on my friends TL grill i did 2 years ago and it still looks better than factory and not a single rock chip either

Kept it becasue it had useful info on fixing the grill.
OP this was your "get out of jail free" noob freebie.

what grit sandpaper are you using? if its too low, youre just going to tear it up. its really hard to mess painting the grille up, because even if there are flaws after you paint. you can always go back and resand the area.
