Hi all. I just got a speeding ticket in Yakima county, Washington, and have no clue what I should do. It was for 80 in a 70 zone at 7:15 a.m. in the morning. I've never gotten a ticket before.

The options I'm thinking are:
1. Fight it with an attorney, in which case, does anyone have anybody they'd recommend and how much they'd cost?

2. Defer the ticket. Although I don't know the details, I've heard something like they can defer the ticket for one year and if I don't get any other tickets, I'm off the hook. Can someone elaborate on the details?

On the defer, that's correct, but you cannot use that for a few years afterwards. So if you're ticketed for going 100 on the freeway or for street racing, you can't defer that bigger ticket.

I'd fight in. 80 in a 70 isn't a big issue, and it's very common. Hell, people usually go 80 in 60. Fight it, and you don't even need an attorney. Just present your case yourself. You should be in a public court house where there'll be a bunch of other people also fighting or defering as well, so make it short and sweet. And many times if the officer doesn't attend, it's just thrown out anyway.

 

Thanks for the advice. The problem is that the court is over 2 hours away from my place, so I'd probably need an attorney. I'm guessing there's no way to request a hearing in a closer courtroom, right?

Any idea if there's a fee for deferring a ticket?

 

there is no fee for deferring a ticket .. but most of the time you can make an appointment with the county attorney office at the court house and talk with him and explain that this is you first ticket and for the most part be very nice and dress nice and he will drop it for you.. or defer the ticker..
Oh and you will have to go to court for the ticket where it says.. SOrry
Most of the time if you go to court they will drop it.. dont get an attorney. All the courts want is your money for showing up in court. and if you have to pay the ticket for some reason then you are out both court and ticket fees.

So try the court house and defer. if it doesnt work.. use the money for court fees and buy a good radar detector...

to defer a ticket you have to pay the ticket and not get a ticket within a year to get it off your record. so it does cost money, to fight the ticket and getting a lawyer would be like 300 bucks, but what i would do is defer this ticket, and if you get another ticket within a year fight that ticket so you can still have a ticket off your record.

 

Thanks for the tips guys. Does anyone know how the points system works in Washington? Do all tickets affect insurance rates, or just those that result in points? How do I know if my ticket has any points associated with it?

 

If i remember correctly, when you defer you pay a fee to do it. It's like $200 (at least in 2000)
Just know if you do get a ticket in that year while one is deferred, the ticket wil come back and and you'll have to pay that one and the one you just got. So both tickets go on your record. Fighting it a little harder on the second one especially if its for the same offense. I know from expirence.
I would just get a good lawyer, its $300 but you wont have a chance of it coming back to go on your record

wtf she doesnt do yakima? She did ritzville... this little tiny *** town that gets the revenue from traffic tickets lol, its even further away then yakima I believe.

 

hey, my lawyer is good too..he helped me get rid of a speeding ticket.. hes very good as well.. he does travel to yakima, but i believe he charges more cuz he has to drive there.. i believe its 350.. if you want his number.. let me know..
