Parking citation -- no front plate (Portland)

I'm not trying to fight this (because clearly I'm guilty), just passing the information on. I've had my G35 coupe for just over four years now, and have never used a front license plate. This morning I had it parked outside the Daily Cafe in the Pearl, and although I had properly paid to park, I received a citation for "no front plate". It's from the parking police, not city or state, and it's $35, which is not that bad a price for going 4 years with no front plate. It's not a "fix-it ticket" either, just a fine.

I'm a bit surprised, actually, that I haven't gotten one sooner. I don't park in metered parking very often (maybe two or three times a month) but if the parking cops are ticketing for no front plate I would have thought they'd have caught me before this. Anyone else ever get ticketed?

One last question: I'm not about to go to court over a $35 non-moving violation, but there is an option to "Post bail with an explanation" where you pay the fine but send along a written explanation. Has anyone ever had any luck getting the fine reduced by writing something like, "Sorry, my front plate bracket is broken..." etc.?

Not gonna happen, I don't even think they bother reading them, they just laugh and take your money.

I've received 2 front plate tickets from a meter maid, that gave me a parking ticket at the same time. So 2 tickets at a time, on 2 separate occasions. I did contest it, and had it reduced to about 1/2.

This was at about 11:30am, corner of NW 13th and Kearney, about a block from REI. I didn't see the guy today, but just last week I saw one of the parking enforcement guys on a bicycle checking the meter slip on my window (same block). I don't know what made the difference today.

If you write a good letter, you have a better chance of getting a refund of all or most of the fine. Give both a good reason and a funny reason.
