I got a call from Amazon today about a job out in Seattle. Talked to a couple of people and to my surprise they said that it's a weird place. Not what I thought. What's it really like? Would it be too crazy for a single 25 year old male to move from Philly to Seattle to work there? Anybody work at Amazon? I hear nothing but good things about it.

 

i grew up in bellevue and miss seattle a lot. i've been living in the sf bay area for about 9 yrs now but will be moving back to seattle hopefully next summer. it's a great city. small city feel, big city resources. people are nice, very active and it's just beautiful. definitely check it out before making a decision one way or the other.

Depends on what you expect. When I was driving though Pa (jersey to upstate ny), there were 3 radio channels playing Bruce Springsteen all at once.

It doesn't have that old industrial city feel if that's what you want. But there are old parts of town.

If you are die hard east coast/old city type, then this city might not be for you. If you like newer city, upscale, hiking,biking,ski/snowboarding, coffee/latte, then there's definately tons of places. Considering you are going to work for an internet place like Amazon, I think you will like it here.

If you like the outdoors Seattle is a very cool place to live. There is soo much to do all over the state. I have lived in quite a few places and Seattle is by far the best.

seattle definitely has a lot of yuppie type of people, the berkenstocks and wool sock kinda of people, but there's a lot of other kinds of people. there are quite a bit of asian business type people, many of which have nice cars i'm jealous of too. not sure what you're into, but there are a lot of cool night clubs too whether you like to go dance or go to drum and bass shows. i live about 25-30 miles south. i like seattle and surrounding, but i wouldn't want to live there, and i'm a 24yo male. i like city but not that big. too many for people for me. congrats on a job at amazon though! i wish i had a job where i made lots of
$ and it didn't suck... if you do decide to move out here, or even visit let me know and maybe we can meet up sometime. GL

seattle is a great place especially if you like to be outside. you get the best of both worlds - big city living (nightlife, restaurants, etc), and nature. we're sitauted in between large lakes (watersports are huge here), and 10-20 minutes from mountains (hiking, skiing, snowboarding). People in the city are generally pretty active. I live and work here and love it! In the winters, after work, we'll hit the slopes for some night skiing; in the summers, hiking, basketball, soccer, etc. It's just a great environment.

Btw, would you be working in the HQ, or in their "offsite" location (it's really only 5 minutes from the HQ? Amazon's "offsite" location is in my building in dowtown.

 

sansin, I don't have a job there. Yet. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

If you are going to work for Amazon, the first question I would ask is which location. If it is in Seattle and you are planning on buying, you should be prepared to commute an as*load unless you want to live in a maytag box. Oh yeah, and I would ask to go on a tour of the offices. I don't know if you will like that hollow-core-door-desk feel. They took lean production and applied it to everything.

I grew up here and have lived in the south, southwest, midwest, and worked in almost every state before I moved back. There aren't any sunny days. It doesn't rain 365 but if you are used to not seeing a cloud in the sky half the time, kiss that goodbye. It is overcast 9 months a year.

In comparison to the East though, it is not nearly as crowded.

I would have continued on my adventures if my family hadn't drawn me back . . .
