For the OP, if you are in school you can get an educational discount which puts the price down to a semi reasonable price. Check adobe's site for more info.

As an Adobe employee I am going to ignore all the post on how to get it illegally. You should probably start by looking at the various products we have to offer in the Photoshop family. The average user does not usually need the full-blown CS2 version of PS, and can typically do all they need with Photoshop Elements. We sell it on www.adobe.com for $99.99, but I am sure you could shop around and find it cheaper.
Please do not resort to illegally downloading it, many cracks and torrent files have been known to hide trojans.
Also, if you are interested is seeing the Beta of Photoshop CS3 (due out later this Spring), you can download it at: http://labs.adobe.com/ Without a CS2 serial number there is only a 2 day trail grace period, but it would give you two days to play with the product.

There's also fairly long trial versions for various versions of photoshop. I am not going to comment on obtaining it illegally, since I'm not sure this is what the parent is looking for (if they did, they'd do it).
The elements version is very decent for most processing. It can also be bundled (cheaply) with other products. If you wish to stay on the legal side and only need to do basic processing (or are in the market for an appliance that will be bundled with it), elements is a good choice.
Also if you want a free *and* fully legal tool for editing photos, The Gimp (search the Internet for it) will be able to do *a lot* (unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be able to handle Nikon's NEF format, but you can use the freely available tools provided by Nikon to export as TIFF and edit in The Gimp afterwards).

How honest is it to spend 500 bucks on a software which they are probably making 500% of the profit?
If you see it that way, you wont mind getting it for free.

If you can't afford it, don't bother mentioning getting it illegally. There are people that can afford it, and they should pay for it or else there would be no business for the photoshop software.
Me personally, i say they should drop the price
. But i don't use photoshop anyway that program is too confusing i just have my friend edit pictures hah
. BTW MS PAINT ***** on PS. FTW.
