Custom Dual Sedan Exhaust!! lots of pics

Last weekend I took a road trip down to Miami Muffler. Miami Muffler has a mandrel bender and will do just about anything you want (exhaust-wise).

Funny enough, it looked like infiniti/nissan day when I was there. Besides my sedan, there was an FX35 and a 350Z, both getting custom exhausts. I even ran intio another forum member, mechanol. He had his coupe's exhaust done at Miami Muffler.

Here was my goal:

very quiet , but with performance gains!

With that in mind, I already had test pipes on the car. It was pretty quiet, but I did have some rasp at 3K and 6K. Overall it detracted from the luxury nature of the vehicle.

I didn't want to get rid of the test pipes, so I decided to go with a true dual exhaust consisting of 5 (!!!) magnaflow mufflers. Thats' right, I am not kidding, 5 mufflers!

Here are the pics: Sorry about the crappy camera phone pics. Blame motorola for that.

This is Miguel ( owner of Miami Muffler) test fitting the Dual in/dual out "X" Magnaflow. You can se the mandrel bent pipes comes from the already installed test pipes.

Here's a side shot:

Next, comes the dual 4" magnalfow mufflers. These are very effectove at killing "rasp."

Close up of the same mufflers:

Then, they started working on the tail section. Because of the shape of the floor pan where the factopry muffler resided, I came up with the idea of placing the mufflers in a "V" shape. There is a rib in the floor plan that prevents these 2 muffler from being placed vertically in there. Additionally, I bent the stock heat shield up and around the rib.

Another shot. Notice how I had them offset the tips to match the curve of the bumper:

A little TIG welding for the tips. Nice Touch!

Nice snug fit. The 3.5" (O.D.) tips fill out the factory cutout beautifully.

Final sections of mandrel piping:

Just about done:

I doubt I saved any weight, but I am on a diet! The exhaust makes a beautiful sound, not a hint of rasp!!! It sounds better than every sound byte I have heard online, compared to others with test pipes. It is very powerful sounding.. I thought it would be much quieter than it is. It keeps getting quieter each though.

I may have them put a flange just after the right rear 4" muffler. That would make it do that the whole thing can come down without cutting. it was the end of the day on a saturday when they did this. They were on and off my car for about 4.5 hours. They usually close at 1:00, but it took 'til 1:30 to finish.

Here are some shot of the car on the ground:

I forgot to mention that it is 2.5" piping all the way. The tips are 3.5" OD.

Anyone have an easy way to get a sound byte of the exhaust?

Thanks,

Andrew

It looks like a nice and clean job. How is the sound and performance? What did it cost to do the whole thing?

Thanks.

Very nice work. Interesting that you used a dual in/out cat? Any particular reason not to use a similar dual in/out muffler also? Since you have them right next to each other?

good stuff. does the muffler give the car a nice deep hum at idle..i bet it rumbles at wide throttle giving it a very aggressive sound yet tame at idle.

It is a dual in/dual out muffler, NOT a catalytic convertor.

This was significantly less than the Stillen. Also, I can only imagine how loud the still must be without cats!!!! Most people complain about the noise from the stillen , and that is with cats installed.

You can download the video here:

http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/commun...pid=284139&ck=

Click on "exhaustvideo.3g2"

You have to save it. Also you'll need Quicktime 6.5 or higher to play it.

Sorry about the quality, it is my cell phone. You can here that it si pretty quiet at low revs and idle, but a freak at WOT!! If you listen carefully you can hear the nice hum at idle.
I made this video in my garage, so the garage may have amplified the sound.
