Phatbox Car Mp3 (digital media) Player

Mod: <A href="http://phatnoise.com/products/digitalmediaplayers/index.php">Phatbox Car Mp3 (digital media) Player</a>
Cost: $ 799 for 20 gig
DIY: yes
Difficulty: Easy
Time to install: 30 minutes, including software & usb installation

Overall value: 5 out of 5

Review:

So, i've had this unit in my car for several months now and i can still say it is by far the best modification that i have done.

The Phatbox integrates with the existing Bose headunit and allows mp3 and other digital media playback using the stock headunit's buttons and steering wheel controls. Music and files are loaded onto the phatbox through a removeable hard drive cartridge that sits in a docking station connected to your computer via USB post. It is available in 20, 40, 60 or 80 gig, but the basic 20 gig unit will hold over 4000 mp3 songs.

I have found the sound quality to be excellent overall with higher bass, less distortion, & better sound than CDs.

The phatbox software is fairly easy to use and has the ability to convert (rip) songs directly from CD's to mp3 or other digital media formats for playback on the phatbox.

Songs on the phatbox are sorted and organized by the mp3 tags. The mp3 tags can be edited in windows or with the phatbox software.

Navigation through the music is very easy using the Bose buttons, steering wheel controls, & the unit's voice announcements (over the stock stereo) of Artist, Playlists, Genre, or Album names.

Installation is simple if you request the "beta satellite radio cable" which will allow direct connection to the sat prewire plug in the trunk.

At a price of $ 799 for the 20 gig unit, this an expensive upgrade. But when compared to Satellite radio with monthly service fee, or a double din replacement of the stock head unit, it may actually be cheaper.

My phatbox has now made CD's obsolete to me.

I SOOOO want this but with the Titan has been eating up all the mod money, so I have to wait but maybe the price will fall soon and I can get it.

So you can use the Phatbox _or_ your satellite receiver... but not have both hooked up for use at the same time?

If so, has anyone found a way around this?

Ok, here's my question. I have an 05 with the premium Bose system, but no SAT, and no SAT button on the head unit. WOuld I still be able to use this, would the wire for the sat be in the trunk, and how would I switch to the phatbox if there is not SAT button on the head unit?

Thanks for any answers
Dave
