Ever wonder why there is a light sensor on the front of the rear view mirror? the one on the side of the buttons is to control auto dimming of the mirror which makes sense but why is there one facing the road??
oh... it's to control the illumination of the back lit buttons....

wait! im confused. your stock rear view mirror had light up buttons? the front photocell controls the illumination of the buttons. the auto dimming is controlled by the photocell on the same side as the buttons. there are two photocells

Now I'm confused, I thought the illumination of the buttons was controlled the same way as all of the other buttons (via light switch) and the two photocells worked together to control the dimmer. So if the front was dark but the back was getting hit with light, then the mirror would dim. Blocking that sensor, with a parking pass for example, would cause the mirror to dim (turn blue) because the sensors think it's night time and there's a semi-truck with hi-beams ridding your rear-end.

so stock, the mirror has no illumination. dont think any of the g35/350z for any year has a model that has illuminated buttons. there are places for leds to be soldered on and you need to get power to them. the front photocell is connected to the logic chip that when it is dark outputs a 5v signal to a transistor that connects power to the leds. only the photocell on the side or the buttons affects dimming.
