Hi all Im looking in to purchasing a used Diff from a nismo 350z. Is this the nismo limited slip as seen here http://www.importpartspro.com/nilisldi07ni.html? Or is just a vlsd like my car already has?

 

That is the clutch-type unit 1.5 way (full locking on acceleration, 1/2 locking on deceleration), not the same as the VLSD that comes stock on the G35. The important thing when buying a used one is to VERIFY it's actually a nismo, the VLSD has much more of a taper on one end whereas the nismo does not but the big thing to look for is the locking pin, you can SEE IT through the housing after you remove the differential cover. Here's a picture of what I'm talking about.



When you take it all apart you can see what that actually is, THIS is what makes it a 1.5 way, when it rotates under torque during acceleration that locking pin slides down through that V-shaped groove which expands the unit and puts pressure on the clutch plates, under deceleration it slides through the upper straight grooves (which takes a ton more effort to do without the angles cut like the bottom part hence it's not a 2-way locker).



If the seller won't open the differential cover so you can actually verify it's a mechanical differential then be warned that you're probably going to get scammed.

 

Also, the Nismo can be configured as either a 1.5 or a 2 way, you disassemble the unit and the pressure plate can be rotated so the locking pin lines up on either the 1.5 way or the 2 way holes.

 

Just buy a Quaife and be done with it.

ATS Super Silent, can be configured to be almost literally silent, multiple locking pin cam angles, various configurations of clutch plates for various engagement settings but they are definitely spendy lol.

 

Depends... if this is a race car or you just want something predictable. I agree with Blue Dream, Quaife if budget friendly.

 

The nice thing about the nismo is you can shop around for a budget used unit easier than an aftermarket. But yeah the quaife is definitely budget friendly if you want a helical unit.

Honestly though if this is just a street car the OEM VLSD is perfectly fine.
