Has anyone done the oil consumption test at Austin Infiniti?
Hello everyone,
So about a week or 2 ago I was driving down 360 in Austin, Tx. Put the clutch in to shift and my engine fluttered and shut down and refused to start for about 5-10 minutes.
This obviously concerned me so I began searching online for possible causes. I didn't find any particular solution to this issue but I did see the post about the oil consumption issue. Since I have a 2006 6MT Sedan I fall squarely into the middle of the affected engines.
I hope you don't all hate me, but I'd been lazy since I got the car last August and had just paid to have the oil changed. After seeing the TSB I decided I'd do it myself and I found I was 1-1.5 quarts low after about 2800 miles.
From what I can tell this is conseradible OC according to the TSB so I just went into the Austin Infinti dealer and I was a little suprised with how they responded and I wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience, or if this is what I should expect.
First off, the service rep I spoke was very friendly, but as soon as the mechanic came out I felt like I was on trial. I told him about my engine shutting down and refusing to start for 5 minutes and he said that since I waited there was nothing they could do to diagnose the issue--okay, that's legitimate--if it happens again I'll come in immediatly.
Then with the oil consumption is where things seemed to get a little fishy. While I can't say I've read all of the posts related to the TSB I have read a considerable number of them. I told the mechanic that I'd just changed my oil and noticed that I was about 1.2-1.4 quarts low after about 2800 miles. I let them be the first to mention oil consumption and they said that "if its actually consuming oil" we have to change it and then you come back in. Thats fine with me if they want to change my oil to start testing, but is it normal for them to charge me to do it?--I dont need to change it, they need to change it to confirm what is wrong with their engine... Anyway, maybe I'm being ridiculous and I should just pay for it and stop complaining, if this is the case please let me know and I'll be quiet =). (My concern is that none of the versions of the TSB that I've seen say anything about an initial oil change to do the test--they all take an initial measurement and then come back. The Austin dealership told me that I'd pay for an oil change and then when I came back in they'd drain it and measure it... I hadn't seen that mentioned anywhere either, but maybe I've missed the most recent version?)
The other thing that made me nervous is when they skeptically asked me how much oil I put in it after I said I replaced it myself on the last change. I told them 5.0 quarts because I changed the oil filter. The mechanic immediatly told me I should be putting 5.3 quarts and that 5.0 was not enough for the engine, and more over that not properly filling the engine would cause it to burn oil... Anyway, I double checked my manual at home and it definitely says 5.0. Did I miss an update to the manual? I asked them if I had; they werent sure, but he was positive it was 5.3.
Maybe I'm just a bit parinoid of dealerships, but it sounded to me like they were just trying to lower the possiblity of my car meeting the oil consumption test requirements.
Anyway, the point of this post is to see if I'm being treated correctly by the dealership... I left the place feeling like I couldn't get an honest oil consumption test out of them--do they treat all of their customers like that?
Thanks for your input,
Brooks

Is there another Infiniti dealership nearby you can go to? If I were you, I would find another dealer/stealer to look at it. When SW Infiniti in Houston started to give me their crap, I moved on to West Houston Infiniti and have never gone back. Let your feet and wallet do the talking!
Hi Cato,
Thanks for the response... I actually bought my car from West Houston Infiniti, I may call them up and see if they'll cut the cr*p. I've got family I can visit in Houston. Its the third closest dealer to me unless Nissan dealers will do this test? Has anyone heard good things about the San Antonio dealership?
Thanks!

i need to do oil consumption test here soon too. i called southwest houston infiniti and some guy named jeff was a real *******. im 3 hours from houston and thats the closest infiniti. he wanted me to do a 500 mile test. so that means i have to drive up there. get an oil change or a mark. then drive home and drive right back. a total of 500 miles round trip. so i called west houston infiniti and a guy named tony told me i will have to go in and come back in 1000 miles. and only have to do it once.

I bought my sedan at SW Infiniti. The service department guys there turned out to be a bunch of AssH0les. I have never gone back. Their parts department guy turned out to be the Biggest AssH0le ever. It was actually the Parts Department guy who broke the camels back. I would NEVER recommend anyone go there!
Just my $.2 What a bunch of jerks!
