Auto Insurance - Who do you use?
I will say upfront that I do not own a G (yet, planning on it though), but wanted to recommend the insurance company I use: Amica Insurance (www.amica.com), headquartered in Dallas. Therefore, my rates will not be comparable to yours.
I used Allstate insurance for over 10 years and always thought I was getting the best rates around (it helped that our agent was my wife's old college friend). Then I saw Amica rated second (after #1 ranked USAA) in Consumer Reports a few years ago. I checked them out and saved $500 annually (for two cars - my '92 240SX and my wife's '98 Toyota Camry). I like to shop around every two years or so and I actually take the time to call at least few companies and get quotes. Amica has been the least expensive ever since we switched to them (about four years ago). Amica policies are annual, not 6 month terms.
Amica Insurance has been ranked #1 in customer satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates for five years in a row (Consumer Reports has not done a car insurer ranking in the last five years). Despite their ranking, Amica is a very low key company; I don't think I have ever seen them advertise.
I always recommend that people have their auto and home insurance with the same company because you get to take advantage of several discounts. Moreover, you have more leverage in negotiating rates. One great advantage of Amica is that if you have no claims against your homeowners insurance during the coverage period, you get a check back in the mail for 15% of your total homeowners insurance premium (it's called a dividend). They don't publicize this and I didn't know about it until I suddenly received a check in the mail almost a year later. So these savings were in addition to what I already thought I was saving.
Okay, I know this getting too long, but I'll share just a couple last points. One other advantage of Amica's auto insurance policies is its flexibility. With Allstate I had the three tiered $100K/$300K for bodily injury liability and $50K for property damage liability. Amica doesn't have those three tiers; they only have one which groups the three all together. So I have $500K total liability coverage. The advantage of this is that if you ever need more coverage for one type of liability, you have the total $500K to tap into instead of being limited by individual limits.
Finally, I always recommend taking an online defensive driver course every three years to enjoy a 10% discount (on one of the line items, not the total insurance premium). You can do this and still retain the right to use it when you need it to get rid of a speeding ticket.

turk,
You speak highly of them and I will call them to see what they have to offer. Can you be honest and give me any dislikes you have had with them? I would like to know any "gotcha's". Thanks for the heads up.

I live in Southern Cali and pay $567.00 for 6 mo's. I am 40 have a perfect driving record and have everything insured through Farmers Insurance (House, Cars, Boat, Motorhome) so I get a pretty good discount.

By the way, I just received my policy renewal documents in the mail a couple of days ago. Our coverages are the following:
- Liability coverage: $500K each accident
- Uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage: $500K each accident
- Collision: $500 deductible
- Other than collision: $500 deductible
- Towing and and labor costs: $80 per disablement
- Rental reimbursement: $35 per day/$1050 maximum
Our ANNUAL rates are as follows:
'92 Nissan 240SX SE Coupe: $484 (i.e. $242 per 6 months)
'98 Toyota Camry XLE: $619 (i.e. $310 per 6 months)
Please note that I work out of my house so that probably helped my rate. My wife's Camry was top of the line at the time of purchase, so it's purchase price was much closer to a G35 price, in case you were wanting to compare.
Hope that information helps.

John, Do you live in Austin proper or one of the burbs? Your physical address makes a big difference in your rates. When we moved from Houston to Sugar Land, say nine miles difference, our rates dropped quit a bit.

That's a really good point; I should've thought to add that piece of information. I don't live in Austin proper, not even in the burbs, way beyond that. That will make a difference, but I don't know how much. FYI, the Camry rate is based on a daily 100 mile round-trip drive, which is probably a lot more than the average. I did not intend to say that your rates would be as low as mine, just give you a point of reference. That said, I should've mentioned where I live. Thanks for bringing attention to it.
I'm from New York City.. I just turned 25 with 4 points on my license/ defensive driving and full coverage... and have Progressive.. They gave me the lowest quote out of the major companies... 1300 for 6 months.. Customer service has been excellent so far. In November those 4 points come off just in time for renewal so it should be lower.
