Purchasing Out of State

Has anyone had experience purchasing a vehicle out of state and registering it in your home state? The dealer told me that I had to pay Texas license/registration/inspection ($127) and then I could return to Oklahoma and register the car.

I spoke with the tag agency here in Oklahoma and she told me that I should not have to pay a dime and just to get a 30 day temp license. She said I might have to sign an affidavit stating that I would register the car in Oklahoma.

Who's right in this matter? I know it's only $130, but if the dealer's scheming me... that just pisses me off.

I believe the dealer has to register the car in the state that is was sold. You can't get away from that. I'm in a similar situation.

I bought in TX. I live in CA, if I register my car before 6 months of ownership I'd have repay taxes on the sale price of the car. So i'm waiting. (crappy CA laws)

I bought my car in Texas but live in Louisiana. I paid for registration and license and the total was around $100. I also paid Louisiana sales tax that same day. Several weeks after the purchase, I received my plate and registration without any problems. This particular Inifinti dealer contacted a local place in New Orleans to do all of this. You should not have to register your car in TX, I don't think? You will get a temp license plate when you drive home.

I'm in Austin, but buying in Memphis. The dealer told me all I pay for is the car. The rest is done in Texas. That was his response when I asked for a total. I'm hoping he wasnt thinking that I assumed paying that extra stuff. I mean, I asked for a TOTAL for a reason. I'm picking the car up Sunday. WooHoo!

Thanks for the info guys... looks like I should be looking to pay about $100 or so, then pay taxes back home (3.25% whooo hoo!!!).

BTW, Ray, did you pick up an '06? And also, how did u manage to pick up the car on a Sunday? Are the dealerships open on Sunday? Congrats on your purchase!

I picked up an 04 sedan in Tennessee. The dealership was closed but opened on Sunday for us. My dad has a friend that works for the place. Right now all I have is the car. No reg sticker, inspection sticker, title, nothing, just the car. They are going to send the title when my check clears. Then I can get all my paperwork in order.
