Apparently it's because of this accident, so now there's a few checkpoints for modified cars. I would lay low until the impact of this story dies down.

The crazy part, is that I used to go to UC Riverside, and I drove down that 60 all the time. But if the two drivers were racing going over 100 MPH (notice I said, "if"), then this is truly a sad story. I can't imagine what the driver of the celica is going through now. How do you explain to the dead girl's parents that they lost their daughter because you were racing another car.

If the driver of the celica and the Z4 get booked on felonies as what is suggested by the news story, then their lives are forever changed too.

I went to med school after UCR. I know that no school would take me and no residency would look at my application if I had felony street racing on my background. Really a sad story.

this only happened less than 2 days ago and two of my roommates were really good friends with the girl who died. it's been pretty quiet in my apartment because those two roommates are just torn apart because of this.

Wow, less than 24 hours, and it's already old news.

Anyway, some more links:

Looks like the names released are all Asian. I bet the roommates are torn apart. I can't imagine what it would be like to have to tell the parents of one of my friends that their daughter/son died in my car while I was going over 100.

While it is a sad story, the cops have gone way overboard with this. I was watching the news last night and they were showing a checkpoint in Riverside and inspecting cars which fit the "street racer" profile. They impounded some 68 cars for stupid things as petty as an illegal intake.

Ah, gotcha. I remember that they had check points on occasion around UCR. One time it was because of a drunk driver, so they were checking everyone on University Ave. I was riding in my roommate's car. Both us were pre-meds. I think the cop took half a second to decide that we weren't going to be worth the trouble and waved us through.

I think that they were all friends, so it wasn't as if they were racing a stranger. But all of their lives and their family's lives are forever changed. According to one news article, one of the surviving passengers had "serious head injuries." Hopefully he'll recover fully, but I'd hate to be the one responsible if he doesn't and ends up requiring 24 hour nursing care the rest of his life.
