August 14-15 2004 Nisei Week Car Show
The nation's premiere import auto show hits Southern California on the 5th Annual Nisei Week Car Show and Carnival, where the car show meets cultural experience in Downtown Los Angeles. Mainstream Productions presents the Nisei Week Car Show to be held at Little Tokyo on Saturday (JDM vs. DTM) and Sunday (Showoff Car Show), August 14-15 2004. This is the place where the top-notch show cars come out to compete and show.

How many people going? Showing? Should we start a sign sheet?

Re: August 14-15 2004 Nisei Week Car Show
I'll probably go check out the Nisei Week Car Show. My old car-club friends [Bosozoku] usually show some of their cars.
Since I'm Japanese-American, and old-school, I feel obligated to give a brief history of the Nisei Week Car Show. Back in the early 80's, the "import scene" was just starting, except we didn't call it the "import scene" we just called it "fixing up" our cars for the purpose of racing/cruising. Back then some of the popular cars were 70's Celicas, Datsun 510s, Mazda RX-2s and RX-3s, and American muscle cars.. Mustangs and such. Summer is the season of the Obon Festival..an annual Buddhist celebration. All of the Buddhist Churches in the LA/OC area would have a carnival. Cruising these carnivals was the big thing back then. The Nisei Week Carnival would be the final culmination of all the festivals and all the cruising. I remember staying up late the night before the Nisei Week Carnival, working on friends cars to get ready for the cruise. The cruise became bigger and more popular every year until the late 80's when the cops would crack down hard on the cruisers. Someone then came up with the great idea of having an organized car show so people can show off their cars without getting in trouble, and thus the Nisei Week Car Show was born. All kinds of different cars were brought to the car show until the mid 90's when the Import Scene really blew up. So now it's mostly like an Import Show. It's still cool though. But I long for the days when we used to cruise in cars that we built ourselves, with parts that we fabricated from stolen stop signs or swapped out from other cars.. tuned by trial and error, not store bought bolt-on items.
Thus ends my story. Sorry for the lengthy post, it's just I had an attachment to Nisei Week and the whole cruising thing.
