Simple way:

Guility until proven innocent.

Any aftermarket parts are effectively considered illegal unless proven to be legal.

If you run an exhaust, you run the risk of getting pulled over. Even with documentation, the cop can still write you a ticket, and you'd still have to get it dismissed.

All BOVs are illegal in California. Period.

IMO, all cars with a BOV deserve to be pulled over and impounded for inspections.

When I got an exhaust ticket, I thought I could get it signed off but the lady downtown said that I had to take it to the state ref for them to decibel test it and give me a sticker, and then go back downtown to pay the $25. What a pain in the butt.

In California the limit is under 96dB
On the G they rev the engine to about 4600rpm when they check the dB

I've been ticketed for a stock exhaust.

Ref did not even bother checking the dB, as he looked under the car to verify my statement that it had never been modified. He confirmed via untouched bolts and factory embossing on the exhaust.

Cruising.

I was in the 91 fasttrak and my transponder didn't read, so the chp officer pulled me over. Of course when he walks up to the car, the transponder is in plain view, so he needed to find something to bust me on. He told me to start the car, and the start-up blip was "an illegal exhaust modification because cars aren't that loud when they start".
