Did I say that??? ... may be you misinterpret it. The drive by wire is eager to open up the butterfly and start dumping gas (regardless of rpm). So, unless you learn to feather the peddle and go as shallow as you can ... it'll get it's way. It's almost an art and it sucks! I'll find myself doing it for 1/2 the tank then go ... eff this ... barrrghhhhhhhhhh bargggggghhhhhhhhhhhh ... 16 mpg ... doh!
Fuel consumption is directly proportional to rpm, so the less you rev the less fuel you'll consume. Of course, you'll have to find a good balance because too little meant chitty chitty bang bang. I find 1800-2000rpm just enough to get by up shifting (provided on level surface). The VQ's robust enough down low to pull through at 1500 ... albeit a bit rough around the edges.
The synchros are always working buddy. The clutch simply disconnects the tranny to the rest of the drivetrain. The intermediate shafts inside are still free spinning at close to the speed when you last disconnected it. It's the synchor's job to slow (or speed up for a down shift) the sucker down so it can mate up to the dogs of the gears you're going into. Skipping gears makes the synchro's job that much harder; having to bring the shaft down from higher speed (or up from slower speed). I hope that got you a better mental picture. In either case, a properly designed box shouldn't have problem dealing w. gear skipping ... but, its the idea that you can extend the life even more.

Regarding Costco gas.... don't quote me on it, but I suggest that you ask them in person when you get the opportunity...
From what I recall, the attendant told me flat-out that they use something like an Imitation 76 gasoline.... or mixture thereof....
Personally, I stay with big-names.... i.e. Chevron, 76, Texaco, Shell.....

Whaaaaaaaa? 76, Shell and Texaco gas quality are pretty low down IMO. I only use Mobile and Cheveron because I can actually feel the difference when I tried 75 and Shell.
The best way to save gas is actually by not applying the brake pedal and only drive downhills. Seriously though $50 a tank is killing me, I guess I will need to ride in the G35 sedan until gas price comes down.

**** the hybrids....I need to get me a DeLoreon...that runs on garbage.
Those prices vrought a tear to my eyes as well. I spent 50 bones like Eldy in Glendale today...I was almost on empty, I got 315 miles to the tank and my navi still said I had 45 more to go (if i drove nicely)...

Man i feel bad for you guys out in the OC and greater L.A. area, there is a Shell that has 91 for $2.52 per gal
But anyways you guys shouldnt complain about the gas prices, complain about the bottled water prices.
You pay 1 dollar or maybe more for 16 OZ or 1.50 for 1 Liter.
If you do the math, we are getting ripped off on Water.
