Sad news from California Speedway
Where did it say that Kia? It said the track is commonly used by clubs when professional races aren't going on. I don't think they meant people crash and die there commonly
Anyway, they said this was only the 4th & 5th fatalities at CA Speedway. Its a sad story to hear. Its better that we have tracks still though, cuz imagine how much worse it would have been if something like this had happned on the street or something.

Yup very sad to hear. I learned about it yesterday shortly after it happened. It was during a Ferrari Owners Club track event.
The owner of the GT was giving a prospective buyer a ride. They were screaming down the front straight doing ~150mph when a Ferrari decided to merge onto the track from the pit out of no where. No track marshals were present to direct traffic (how silly!). The P guy swirved to avoid the F car, lost control in doing so and smacked the wall at nearly the same speed. It then bounced back towards the infied and caught fire. The passenger was alledgely dead on impact, while the driver was air lifted to the hospital where he later succummed to the injuries. Fire was not the cause of death by the way.
Very sad to see. Looked to be a poorly monitored event that was the root cause.

Bo your welcome. They came directly from an eye witness at the scene of the accident.
Kia,
That quote was taken out of context. The intended statement follwed another that stated car enthusiasts rented the track for private use (in this case the Ferrari Owners Club, FOC) ... "such events are common at California Speedway" ... not refering to the death itself. This was a freak accident that seems to point at the organizer of the event.
I hope that clears it up for others.

Bo,
I've been trying to figure that out myself too ... but haven't much luck. All pics are taken too 'tightly' to reveal the exact location. More details of the crash are flowing in (from by standers) and some are contradictory. Now, I'm hearing there was a track marshal present, but a mistake was made to wave the F-car onto the track. Since I read the merge point was somewhere near 'the end of the straight' ... I'm guessing somewhere after turn 3 of the oval and before the chicane that enters the infield area.

Alright ... here are more details.
Apparently, the FOC event did not use the 'Roval' configuration with the massive straight and banked oval turn. The milder 'infield' layout was used. That was amazing ... the Carrera GT is a monster for being able to attain speed in excess of 150mph!!!
The crashed happened after the bridge in the infield, where the merge in area is. Ugggh ... to think I never did like the in-field only config at Cali. *Shivers*

Its not off the Roval there is no wall on the infield there! So Clint your guess is as good as mine. SV was tehre maybe you can ask Arron.
This just sent chills up my spine! Thats what happens when you go beyond your limits.
