Personalized Plate Question

I just bought my G35 brand new this weekend and was wondering:

Do I have to wait for my regular plates to come in before I get personalized ones? Or do I call the DMV and tell them to change it? I don't know what the procedure is when you just bought a new car.

This is for CA, obviously. Thanks in advance.

Just go to the DMVs website and order your plate. It took my about 7 weeks for my plate to be ready and you have to pick it up at the DMV. When you go to the DMV you bring them either your old plates or your registration, or if you don't have your generic plates yet, your dealer/temp reg. Thats it, just when you get the postcard letting you know that your plates are ready, just set up an appt. and go down and get your plates.

Thanks. So I have to make an appt. to pick them up once I get the postcard? Haha, no wonder they're always backed up.

You don't have to make an appt, but I did and was in and out of there in 20 min.

You have 190 days to drive around with dealer plates. Order it and you will get it in about 8 weeks...I have me real plates but still never put them on because I have the 190 days under my belt but now am -15 days or so under so I better not get caught...but my plates are in I just have to go pick them up, but have to wait for a Saturday in which they open (once a month) due to work.

Where can I find out the info about how long you can drive with the dealer plates and whether or not it's 190 days or not. I can't find it on the DMV website. My plates came in and my personalized ones aren't here yet. It's only been about 30-40 days since I've purchased my car.

well from experience, i got pulled over for not having license plates on my integra last year. and the police officer decided to pull me over for that. once he saw my temporary registration had expired he decided to write me a ticket, and he also mentioned he was being nice and not take my car away from me, as well as the temporary registration is only valid for 90 days.

and quite a handfull of people have told me the exact same thing about the 90 days.

how much did it cost you to get personalized plates by the way? im trying to decide if i should go that route but havent chosen a unique name yet, and i dont want to chose my screen name cuz it aint unique enough lol

Go to the DMV website and look at personalized plates....for a plain one, its 40 bucks the first year, then 30 there after. The DMV website also lets you dynamically build one and see if its already taken before paying or anything...

Dan I will post a pic as soon as I gettem...I ordered them 3 months ago, had them sent to Santa Ana DMV (where I thought I would be working/living), then as of a month ago, I had them transferred to Glendale. Just called them yesterday to see where the hell it is...they said they would call me back.

Ive had my car since Jan 15th and still no plates...I mean I do have the random number one....but not putting it on =)

If I had my plates I would show you...but basically you have to keep the skinny letters "I" together and half space the "wider letters" like P, D, F, O, Q

For the guys with personalized plates, how long did it take you to get them? It says 8-12 weeks, but I wanna know how long it took for you guys. Been about 3 weeks since I've ordered them.

OK, so what's the deal here. When you buy the plate on the DMV website, it asks if the vehicle is Leased or Company Owned. I'm not leasing, but did finance the car. Does this mean it's company owned? And if so, do I just take the DMV form to Infiniti and have them sign it?
