DMV have to be the slowest moving motherf***ers on this planet. My experience was about 4-5 weeks on the pink slip.
Tip: Once sold, make sure the party purchasing fills out the transfer of title, make photocopies of it and make sure you drop it off at the DMV yourself. Don't trust another party to do it. I am still dealing with the total loss/junking of my MR2 from 18 months ago, having visited the DMV 3 times after receiving notices that my registration is overdue. Also on my '99 Impreza that I sold last August, which is far worse, since the bank that loaned the new owner the cash should have filed. The state of California thinks I own 3 cars right now, of which one is intact in Vegas and the other is a piece of scrap metal with parts all over the U.S.
So, when you go to the DMV to turn in the transfer, make sure they give you a receipt and another form that's stamped and signed by the clerk, to avoid too much of a hassle later on. And I mean, too much, because I've done that twice now and they still think it's my car. (bitter much? hell yes!)

You can actually do any transaction at the DMV without any regular documents/forms.

It's called the "Statement of Facts". It's like a super-generic form. They hate it when you do it, but it can take the place of any CA DMV form (including your "pink" slip, at any time.)

You mean the title? I bought a car at CarMax at the end of August (26th or so) and I just got the title today.

Hmmm. Florida is an electronic title state, so mine arrived in a week. S2k is anything but a pos.
