it's same as hacking DVD player that allow you to play DVD of only one region.

Cell companies use to unlock phones for you.

I did that all the time.

I would call my company and tell them that I'm going to Europe for two months and would like to be able to use their sim cards and they would unlock the phone for me and Hellooooooooooooooooooooooo E-BAY.

they can't...it's legal in the US to unlock cell phones so you can use it with whichever cell provider you want
