Radio Acting Weird

I've just (two weeks ago) leased an '08 G35x with the premium package but no navigation. I keep my iPod connected in the center console.

The first week, everything was fine. In particular, when ever I started the engine, the radio would resume its last function. For example, if I turned off the car while listening to an XM station, the radio would resume at the same station. If I was listening to my iPod, it would resume from the same track.

However, for the past few days when I start the car, if I was last listening to the iPod, the radio will be turned off. When I turn on the radio, it doesn't resume from the last track. I have to scroll through the menus to find the place where I left off (which is annoying if I was listening to an audiobook or podcast).

If I was last listening to a radio station, initially the radio resumes on that station upon startup. But about 5 seconds after starting the engine, the radio will just switch over to the iPod input and display that the iPod is not connected.

I did some searching through the forums and found alot about the 2003 models acting up with the A/C blowing full blast. I am having no problems with my A/C.

I'm resigned to thinking I'll need a trip to the dealer, but was interested in hearing if anyone else has experienced similar. Thanks.

mine lately has lagged a lot after starting the motor (for the past 3 days) About the same time period i had bought a AC converter that plugs into the outlet in the center console, I unplugged it today, and since then the radio has been starting up right quickly again...

I unplugged the ipod interface while driving home tonight and I left it unplugged. My thought is to see if having the ipod connected is doing anything to the system. I'll see if the radio starts as normal tomorrow.

I've noticed this too, mainly after several days of not driving much There is a known issue with the ipod not turning off when you turn the car off. It could be that the ipod battery is being completely drained, which would explain the delay in the system seeing it and the fact that it doesn't resume when you restart the car. Next time you turn your car off, check the ipod. I'd be willing to bet it's not turning off.

That's an interesting thought. I went out to the garage and sure enough, the iPod is dead. So either the iPod does not shut off when the car is not on or the car is not charging the iPod when not on. I think some times the iPod does resume from the same place some times, so maybe it does shut off some times.

So why wouldn't the car shut off the iPod? Does it have anything to do with the model ( a 2nd gen nano)?

It's a switched 12 volt, so it's definitely is not charging while the car is off. And it's obviously not turning the ipod off at all / some of the time.

Not sure what the deal is. I have a 3rd gen and 5th gen, and it does it on both of them. The 5th gen is new and the 3rd gen just got a new battery, so that's probably why I don't see it happen all the time. If you are running a 2nd gen on an older battery it probably doesn't have it's full battery life, which would cause it to run down quicker between charges (driving the car).

Only thing I can suggest is to either unplug the ipod or at least make sure it's off when you get out of the car.

After running errands today I confirmed that the iPod does not automatically shut off when the car turns off. If I turn off the iPod manually, everything resumes as normal when I turn the car back on.

Now I just need to figure out how to get the radio to turn off the iPod. Is it a design flaw in the G35 radio? Is it a warranty repair of the radio? Is it the iPod?

I think you are SOL. I'm not sure older generation ipods (1st - 3rd) have a "sleep" function, and the newer ones are notorious for it not working properly. I had the same issue when it was connected to an Alpine unit in an old car.

I did find a few posts that mention that the issue doesn't seem to happen if you change the source from the ipod to something else before turning off the car. That makes sense, since the ipod will think it's paused which should trigger the auto sleep function. I'll have to test that out tomorrow.

I would chalk it up to a design flaw. I know the harness I used in my Tahoe sent a signal to shut down the ipod as soon as the car was turned off, so it is possible.

UPDATE - Solution?

Here's a recent update: I am no longer having this problem. Solution? New Ipod.

Back then I had a 2nd generation 8gb Nano. When I turned off the car, the Ipod would pause but it would never shut off. If I returned to the car before the battery died there would be no problem. If I didn't restart the car before the battery died then I was S.O.L. I tried turning the lock on the Ipod ON and tried OFF. Same result either way.

About a month ago I bought a 4GB, 3rd generation Nano (the squatty one). Now everything works perfectly. When I turn off the car I think the Ipod is paused, but after a few minutes the Ipod shuts itself off.

In summary, I don't know what (car or Ipod or combination of the two) caused the problem with the first Ipod. I now have a 4GB Nano (3rd gen) that works fine in my 2008 G35x.

Good luck to you who still have problems. I understand the frustration.

Joe
