Extending Factory iPod Cable (284H2-1BA0B)?

Greetings. I just got my 2008 G35 Journey (5AT w/ premium) and this is my first post to G35driver.

I'm trying to mount my iPhone 3GS on the front left side of the console (next to the gear shift) using this ProClip mount. Please note that this mount then includes a holder. I have two problems.

First, the factory iPod integration cable does not support charging with the iPhone 3GS. Luckily, this is solved with a Scoche Passport, which is a pin re-assignment dongle.

The second problem is that the factory cable is only ~16" long. The cable is not long enough to pass through the center console to the ProClip holder. Is anyone aware of a longer version of the factory cable (Part # 284H2-1BA0B)?

In the alternative, does anyone know if a dock extender cable like this will affect whether the factory cable works properly?

What worries me a little is that all of these solutions introduce so many points of failure.

Thanks in advance.

if you use the dock extender cable you should be just fine. it's made for exactly that. let us know how it goes!

and ps - buy the cable on ebay or buy.com and save yourself some money

Quick update.

Unfortunately, adding a dock extender cable causes the iPhone to not even be recognized by the car's audio system. If I try the same dock extender on my desktop or laptop, however, the phone is recognized.

Any other ideas? Anyone know if its possible to cut the factory cable and make an extension?

That is exactly what I would do.. cut it in half, strip the wires back (I assume there is red black white and green) and solder in 20 or 22 gauge wire with some heat shrink around the solder points.

So there are actually 12 wires packed into this factory cable. I cut the wire in half, stripped each of the ends and had my friend solder 3 feet of extra wires. Because there are 24 solder points, the extension is a bit thicker than the standard cable, but it's not a problem because most of the wire will be hidden either between the seat and console or inside the console trim.

I ended up wrapping the wire in electrical tape. I think it is too fugly to take a picture of it.

The extended wire works. With the 3GS connected directly, music plays but no power. If you add the Scosche PassPort, music plays with charging capabilities. No issues when I plug the Scosche PassPort into the ProClip holder either.

Once I get the console wired the way I want this weekend, I will post pics.

Lightbulb

I have found that the Scosche PassPort, whenever connected, introduces electrical interference (high pitch whine).

Thanks to Mark Berberich, co-owner of SoundWave Mobile Audio in San Carlos, I found this little gem. He said that the dock extenders we were looking at won't support the voltage change. Instead, the iSimpleŽ ReVolt™ (IS710) will actually solve the problem.

This cable sells for about $20-25. It looks like a dock extender, but is a thicker cable. This is superior to the options I described above because (1) it supports charging without requiring the Scosche PassPort, which is slighly bulky; (2) solves my interference issue; (3) and is 4 feet long, so you don't have to cut and extend your factory iPod cable.

Here's a short video demo:

The one thing I don't like about this cable is that the male end does not snap into the iPod, so I feel like it is loose. But even after moving the phone around on the mount a few times (which I hardly ever do), it seemed pretty solid.

As I started a reply to this thread, I was looking for the iPod/iPhone sync cable I just bought from monoprice a month ago, and it looks like they took it off. Anyway,
here here
are plenty of 6 ft. cables (the standard is 3 ft.) to choose from (and WTF, the exact monoprice cable I was looking for is on there, sold by monoprice).

The Amazon link you sent has 140 listings so I'm not sure which cable you are talking about. Most of the cables listed don't actually have male/female dock connectors. Most have a USB connector and not a dock connector.

I found one listing by Monoprice
here here
, but it looks a lot like the dock extension suggested earlier, but did not work. Have you used the monoprice extension to extend your factory cable? If so, that's definitely a cheaper solution.

Oh you're right, I'm sorry. I didn't read your request thoroughly, and I don't have the iPod connector on my car. I didn't realize the 30-pin connector was part of it, I thought it was just a USB port and you supplied the cord yourself. In which case, those that I linked to would give you 6 feet (without more points of failure). I will keep my eyes open for a female to male extender.

I see other listings like http://cgi.ebay.com/INFINITI-NISSAN-OEM-IPOD-CABLE-G37-G35-M35-FX35-F45-EX-/370423367592?pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories that show the cable as compatible with other models as well, so I think you should be pretty safe.

Please note that this cable should have come with your car originally. This cable is just for hooking up your iPod/iPhone to the stereo. Since it is so short, it won't let you move your iPod outside the armrest nor will it support charging on newer iPhones. For that you need the cable described above.

Has anyone confirmed that the iSimpleŽ ReVolt™ (IS710) works? It's not the cheapest cable in the world (Compared with the dock extender that I, too, purchased for $3 lol). I'm not talking about just charging, but rather being compatible with an 08 G35x ipod integration system. Thanks!

As I noted above, the IS710 worked for me. It charges and integrates with the car's iPod integration system so I can browse and listen to my music. I have a 2008 G35 Journey and an iPhone 3GS. The same cable works with my wife's iPhone 4G. Hope this helps.
