Using iPhone with Nav app through video inputs for onscreen - would it work
Being the cheap bastard that I am, I'm always trying to find a work around to the things my base G does not have. Now, I am thinking about navigation.
My question is this, if I had an iPhone running a navigation app (Navigon for instance) would you be able to run it through the G's vid display? Yes, I understand that I'd need to get the correct vid composite out cables. And, yes, I understand that I would have to perform the mod that dare not speak its name. But assuming those, would it work?
I know I would have to program my destination into the phone and not have the touch screen capability, but would the video from the iPod show up?

ok so i know i had seen someone with a kit out there but all this is is a standard dock connector so i guess you could use this through the aux input but i could have sworn this didn't work with the iphone in that way....i wonder if it's jailbroken...

Good find. At least info wise. So, it looks like you could just hook it up and show on-screen whatever was on the iPhone through the AUX setting. Given certain steps had been taken to do so.
I love how they show one of the things you might want to display in-car is the scientific computer. I guess that's to calculate the tangent your car will take after bouncing off the guard rail.

Just looking over the kit, the first step in the instructions is "Jailbreak your iPhone."
And, when you've got your screen going to another source, the phone itself is black. Plus, the phone won't work with video out.
Too bad. Sounds like this gives me the answer I need. Although, not the one I was wanting.
ETA: The information on this was on the "Extended Information" tab on the original link.

Although, I just saw this: http://www.iphoneinquirer.com/2009/0...screen-on.html
Running ScreenSplitr would do it. Now, would I want to jailbreak the iPhone?

hmmm....what gen phone do you have? from everything i have read if you ever have to bring your phone in for service you can do a system restore and they'll never know. of course i guess this precludes you from all future software updates. and obviously you really want to be sure you backed everything up!!
personally i wouldn't but i know that tons of people do it with little problems so maybe im just overly paranoid.

That's just it. I don't have one. The G is my wife's car and her contract is up in February and she's leaning towards an iPhone. I'd be very leery of jailbreaking a new iPhone. I've heard of Apple sending out a code that turns jailbroken phones into paperweights.
All things considered, I'm leaning towards just saying "screw it" and letting her run nav off of the phone and just keep it in the seat or something. She doesn't use it that often anyhow.
