My 08 G35 Sedan Auto with Tire/ 18in Wheel Package is at 8k miles and was wondering if the "dealer recommended" tire rotation and balance for around $150 was worth it or a total rip off? (Was considering waiting until 15k hehe.. I don't like dealers ripping me off. Read a few threads about overpriced maintenance.)
Besides being a rip off how do you rotate the 18in tires since the front and back are different sizes?

i see your point and im not saying its wrong, like i said before, the 200lbs was an estimate, maybe ill go stand on my tork wrench next time and see how bad it really is

hehe.. I didn't check the actual tire sizes. I'll go do that now. Since the service rep recommended rotation and balance I figured he wasn't going to blatantly lie to me.. I guess I'm glad I said, "just the oil change will suffice."

I worked about 5 years as a technician and yet to meet a competent walmart lube tech. they focus more on moving vehicles at based on time more than they care about doing them correctly.
If there are ASE certified tech's at Jiffy Lube, that's news to me. That's the comparison I was making (Walmart vs. oil shops).

When it comes down to it though, oil changes aren't rocket science. Needing an ASE certified mechanic to do one is like requiring a brain surgeon to put on a bandaid.

I could teach my 3 year old niece to do oil changes. It's not like I'd go to walmart for transmission work.

no meant for work in general....i wouldnt trust my car at a walmart or jiffy lube. yes oil changes are not hard to do...but yet we get plenty of stripped pans from fast lube places at my shop. its the fact that they hire anybody...same can be said about parts stores like autozone...they hire anybody.

I personally have never and would never take my car to a fast lube place to do anything....

You're problably better off that way (going with a real mechanic).

But, it'll cost you more time and money.

If you want a cheap/good oil change, dealerships usually advertise them in the newspaper. But, you'll have to wait for the dealer to do it. And they're going to try to sell you everything after one.

I've used an impact on lugs for years. The trick is to use it on the lowest setting to install the lugs and then use a torque wrench to tighten each lug to factory specs.

Is that $30 per wheel? I get my standard G35X 17" tires -15,200 on the clock - roatated every 6K or so. They last longer and at $225 or more per tire, with about 30k miles that you'll get on the stnadard Goodyears [less it you don't rotate] , it's a good investment. My Infiniti Dealer (White Plains, NY) does rotations only with wheel balancing. The wheel balancing shouldn't be needed every time, but they won't rotate without balancing. They charge about $120 for the job. That's high relative to other non-dealer shops. But I've brought other cars to Tire shops (Mavis Discount, Firestone) and had to return several times to redo the balancing. They use shi...y equipment and non caring employees, I find. And give me a hard time when I return. The Infiniti Dealer "jumps" right on any issue I've had. That's worth a few extra bucks at least while still in warranty period.
