225/45/18 winter tires

I know there's a lot of tire threads and I did search before opening this one.

I'm thinking of purchasing some blizzaks from this guy for real cheap. But I am a bit concerned with the low profile of the tires. I know it's a size lower then stock, and with snow tires you usually want a thicker sidewall. Would I have any issues in the snow because of it? Anybody try low profile snow tires like this before?

VDC and ABS should be fine as it would be the same size tire on all 4 wheels.

As far as winter performance you prolly wouldnt notice much difference between the 45 and OEM 50's. I've had previous winter tires which probably had similar sidewall height's. I bet these would work better than other brand snow tires at OEM spec's. Which Blizzaks are these?

They are LM25's. I'm not too worried about dry performance. What really concerns me is the performance in the snow, especially since mine is a rwd.

yeah thats why I referred to winter performance.

You may want to wait until someone with LM25's or other company's similar winter touring tires chimes in. I had some winter touring tires from Conti on my STi that I wasnt thrilled about up here in CNY, but I am not sure if that was the car or tire since I didnt run any other winter tire on the car. I got WS-60s on 17s for my Gx that are 225/55 and its a tank but you are looking at the other spectrum of winter tires with RWD.

225/50/18 are preferrable but if you got a great deal going, I would use 225/45/18 in a heartbeat. One of my summer sets is actually 225/45/18...no problems.

I see that you say in there that you ran that exact winter setup. Do you have any input for me? Would I get a plow effect in the snow since the car would sit a bit lower.

Anybody got a pic with that tire size, how big would the wheel gap be?

Hey Kregg, I just noticed you are in CNY, what city? I'm in Utica.

I'm between Ithaca and Cortland, which is 1/2way between Binghamton and Syracuse. Thats the main reason why I replied originally, I know what the winters are like up this way.

The gap would be a 1/2" bigger than current max, and car would ride 1/2" lower max.

^I drove through that area a couple of times on my way to Ithaca. Anyways I got the tires today. Set of 4 Blizzak LM25's, almost brand new for $375.

Hey! I went to college at Cornell! In any case, I absolutely love LM25's. I had WS50's on my G the first winter but hated them--although they will perform better in severe conditions, on dry pavement, they have horrendously vague road feel. The LM25's feel like all season on dry/wet with very good (not great) winter performance. What that means is, if you normally drive on dry or poughed roads during winter, you will be fine. On unploughed roads, just take your time. I think you will be very pleased with the LM25s. I have the older LM22's on my WRX and love those too. They seem to last a long while too!

Kewl g'luck with the new rubber, here's to not having to use them for a long time (I'm not a big fan of the winters this way) If you guys are ever in the area, feel free to drop by and we can chat G's.

I was on the Cornell campus a few days ago, I'm glad school is out, the place is a mess when students are around....
