Quick brake question - dealer is hosing me right?

So I changed my front pads a month or two ago, and I've been having some squealing, squeaking, etc. when I'm braking for 3 or 4 months. I had my car in to get the shift boot fixed today (it came out....he said he's never seen that before and I've never even heard of it). But I had them look at the brakes he says I need rear brakes. Not a surprise, I KNOW I need new pads so I'm going to do that.

But here's the real question, he wants $220 to resurface the front rotors and 220 to do the rears. He says that's the reason I'm getting all the noise - now I'm under the impression if you change pads that's all you need to do and that resurfacing is NOT necessary and just a way for the dealer to make money. Am I right? Should I just change my rear pads (I'll do it myself if I have time) and tell him to screw off with the $440 to resurface rotors?

lol, take your car somewhere else. turning your rotors doesn't cost much at all at most places. If they used OEM pads and you're squealing I'd bet they didn't bother using brake pad lubricant between the pad and the plate. I doubt scored rotors would cause much squealing.

As far as needing it done...run your finger across the surface of the rotor. Does it feel like there is quite a bit of scoring? If not, just let them go. I doubt they are that bad if you've got an '08.

my G is at 8200 mile mark and the breaks are squeaking and the steering wheels shakes really bad. im due for an oil change next week so im gonna tell them then. but there is one thing im worried about i put 20" wheels on my car and they are gonna put the whole thing on me. i know there is a TSB out for the 08 G about the rotors or something and how would that come into play.

^ The squeaking can mean one of two things: Bad Pads/Replacement needed or need of brake lubricant behind the pads surface.

As for the shaking steering wheel, if it happens ONLY while applying the brakes than your rotors are more than likely to be warped(OEM are famous for that) you can have them resurfaced to get rid of the shaking for a while but fact is you need a change of rotors soon.

However, if the steering shakes regardless of the brakes being applied or not and you have AF rims, it could be that your wheels are either out of balance, bad alignment or you are running rims that require you to have Hub Centric Rings that you are not running.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Kool_yaar i was thinking about resurfacing the rotors. but eventually im gonna get a BBK. the steering wheels only shakes when i brake and yes i havent got an alignment yet which maybe one of the cause of the shaking.

^ Well if you only have 8200mi and have not been abusing the car through potholes you should not be needing an alignment anytime soon, and as you said that the shaking happens while braking that just goes to show that it is NOT an alignment problem but rather a rotor problem.

fyi you can get the rotors resurfaced for about ~$10-15 from your local pepboys if you have one in your area. But if you are looking into BBK then no need to waste money and time on fixing this problem.

I'm gonna get my rear pads changed somewhere (don't have time to do it myself) and I'll ask them to re-lube the front caliper/pad and see if that fixes it

If they want that to resurface them you should be looking into new rotors- possibly a higher quality non OE make more resistant to warpage.

Resurfacing guarantees a shorter life as more prone to future warping.

I think that you should upgrade to better (slotted or drilled) rotors if your gonna spend more than 400 just for Resurfacing and pad. Check out the marketplace they usually have some really good deals for rotors and pads. When I had my coupe the manager at the service place told me it's gonna cost 600 just to change the rear pads so what I did was went to tirerack.com bought front and rear pads for 220 and then 60 for installation I saved a **** load of money. Just like you I need to resurface my rotors but I'll be buying myself the G37 BBK for christmas.

I would have thought this is a warranty job, but if you can take the rotors off youself, any brake shop can surface them for you for a lot less. But unless they are grooved or scored like the others have said, surfacing may not even be needed. Even stock brake pads/rotors would benefit from proper bed in procedures. Take a look at the white paper on bed in procedures here:

TSB ITB00-024e and the newer TSB ITB09-037 should cover it. The dealership just turned my rotors and the judder is gone...for now. Honestly, I wasn't thrilled about having them turned but that's what the TSB and warranty covers. It should be no problem getting the dealer to do it.
See https://g35driver.com/forums/canada/...-warped-2.html

OP - that's way to much $ for turning rotors. You can get new ones for that amount.

haha the guy at the stealership goes - "yeah and you're looking at a rear brake job in addition to what we talked about earlier". I look down and see $329.xx for the rear and I go "Ok so this is for new rotors and pads?" hahha, Austin Infiniti sucks - thank god I know something about cars. You can save yourself so much money by just being knowledgeable. I'm gonna go back to West Houston when I'm back in Houston this weekend.

I have no vibration, or shudder. Just some squealing so I doubt they're warped at all. They work just fine

And Terry, absolutely. I'm planning on getting the rear pads done then head out to some parking lot and do a full bed-in procedure (my front brakes are like 85-90% probably, but never did a bed-in). I'm gonna stick with OEM stuff for now, it works just fine and if anything serious happens its under warranty. If I hit the lotto I'll for sure go Akebono BBK, or maybe wait until I need new rotors and do it all

Dude, read this thread - I've gone through something very similar with my dealer and ended up contacting Infiniti Customer relations. Infiniti CS forced the dealer to refund the ENTIRE cost of rotor cutting + front pad replacement.
