What is the point of all-season tires?

What is the point of all-season tires?

According to this article all-season tires lose their braking distance by at least 30% during freezing temperature. What is the purpose for all-season then? Why would i want to buy winter tires to replace during the winter for my all-season which came with the X? If i am going to buy winter tires then i'd rather have summer tires on the X instead of all-season.

Try running summer performance tires in the cold/snow and tell us how much that tow bill to get you out of that ditch was.

The best thing is to have a dedicated winter set, and a summer set....that way you get the best of both worlds, as long as you make sure you switch out of the summer set before the white stuff hits the road...or as Jeff92se said, that tow bill will be hefty.

I never said that i would use summer tires during the winter. Of course all-season would perform better as i have experienced both. My point was that by having all-season, i wouldn't need to replace them with winter tires. But the article insisted that they should be replaced. If my X came with the summer tires then i would gladly replace them with winter tires.

All seasons are designed to perform "okay" when the conditions get bad. ie.. light snow, moderately cold temps. ie.. get you home.

The average driver cares more about tire life than performance. The longer the tires last, the worse they perform in snow/rain/cornering. All-season tires with a treadwear rating of 400 or less are a good compromise. The hard-as-a-rock 80,000 mile warranty tires are the scary ones. Thank goodness most new cars in the last 10 years were built with ABS (which has to work a lot harder with low traction tires).

I ran on TOYO T1R first winter and VREDESDTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA second one.

No prollems at all (almost)

Joker. I ran the RE050s and they were a joke in anything resembling snow. I've run the sport pilots on a FWD and it was a joke in the snow. I Kumho ESTAs on a FWD and it was a joke in the snow.

I classify All Seasons as Three Season Tires.
I run a performance All Season for Spring/Summer/Fall and dedicated winters for the Winter on my last 2 Infinitis.

it's not and ideal setup for a snowy regions but it's not as disastrous as you say.

The majority of people don't want to be bothered changing tires each season. They're fine with a reasonable trade-off of features as long as it doesn't require buying and storing a complete 2nd set of tires for a single vehicle.

I ran all seasons. The tow bill out of the ditch was 120+tax. No lie.

all season tires are for california drivers only.. or you can just buy summer tires and call them "all season performance" tires
