strip of bronze on back rotors (rust?) and screeching when braking
Hello all
I just noticed that both my back rotors have a bronze color stripe from the center outward about an inch or 2. Is this rust and can I get it off with some type of cleaner? I will take pictures when I have my camera. My brother has a G35 too and his are all silver colored. If you have time check out your rotors when you go out and see if any have this stripe aswell. It looks ugly :/
Also my brakes have started screeching when going under 40mph when lightly tapping the brakes. When I press harder it doesnt make this screeching sound. My car has 28k miles and I bought it used. Its an 08 g35, premium with no navi. Is there some type of gel or something I can apply to the brakes to stop the screeching or is this indicative of needing new brake pads? Im not sure if they have ever been changed in the 28k the car has been used. The stopping power is great but the screeching is driving me nuts. When I wash my car the sound goes away for a couple days..

Sounds like the wear indicators making contact with the rotor. The wear indicator may be leaving the mark on the rotor, and its definitely causing the screaling. Change your Pads and turn (machine) your rotors otherwise you will soon find that you need brand new rotors as the old ones will be scored.
My car does the same thing. I did some research online and talked to the Infiniti service rep and he said that all metal pads on metal rotors will squeal due to vibration. The wear indicator noise to listen for will be squealing even when you're not touching the brakes; that's how you know to bring it in. If you are hearing squealing when you are touching the brakes lightly, and the noise goes away when you push harder, that is just vibration.
I've heard of disc brake quiet that your mechanic can put on when servicing or replacing your pads. I have yet to try that, but I hear good things.
I typically just roll up my windows and turn up the music.

I've moved on to Ceramic pads now. Less noise and far less brake dust as well.
My stock pads squeaked occasionally... seems like it's just the material they're made out of. I replaced at 51k miles and they still weren't worn all the way.
I've read that some of the pad material can get stuck on the rotors and you can clean it off.

I have it on my back rotors as well. I recently replaced all of my rotors and pads (they probably have ~1k mi on them)...for me it's just an eyesore that I'm about to clean off, but now that you mention it, my OEM rotors/pads didn't yield the same amount of rust...
Here's a photo of mine, I take it this is what you are talking about:

My brakes don't screech or make any weird sound, they work fine
edit: i should mention that my pads are carbon, not ceramic

^ YES EXACTLY! I am not the only one that suffers from this eyesore haha
how can we clean this off? This is normal oxidation I take it? Let me know what you plan on doing or maybe some more knowledgeable members can chime in with some advice. This really takes away from the car's appearance and I cant justify replacing the rotors and brakes when these are perfectly functional

I have that on my rotors too. The only way to permanently get rid of it is to paint it. Clean it with some steel wool or brake cleaner, mask off the rest of the rotor and paint it with Hi-Temp paint.
what it looks like is that the pads arent touching that area... so it causes rust. What some people do is take black spray paint (high heat resistant ones) and spray it on the rotors. Drive it around a little and the area where there is no pad contact will still be black and look better than that rust look. I remember there being a DIY on here but its for a coupe... same process tho.
