Rotor question
Rotor question
I have some vibration and noise while braking that doesn't seem normal. I figure its the rotors. Its not a real bad shimmy/vibration like really warped rotors (i've had that before on other cars). While I had the wheels off, I checked the pads which still have plenty of pad left. Here are pics of the rotors, Do they look like they can be/should be resurfaced or do I need to replace them?
those are pretty close up pics!! looks like you got alot! of rotor material to work with...Allthough i have an X, mine were similer, and went 35,000 miles before i finally had enough shimmy, and shakin, so i replaced with R1 prem. blanks, and hawk hps pads,,, VERY happy with current setup....
You should re-surface the rotors and change the brake pads. While you are at it, order the new baffle plates to help with the even heat dissapation for the rotors. That will help with preventing the rotors from warping due to uneven rotor temperatures. The part number for the baffle plates are, 41151-1EX0A and 41161-1EX0A. These baffle plates will fit the Sport model G. You can look at my pitures and you will see how they look.
The stock rotors on these cars tend to be prone to brake judder issues. If and when they do develop it varies, but perhaps yours is just getting started. The thing about judder is that it doesn't necessarily show up as a visible imperfection in the rotor surface, so you can't just look and see it so easily. The cause is an uneven buildup of brake pad material across the rotor surface which creates a domino effect where the rotor ends up developing hot spots which harden the metal and provokes more uneven deposits. Once the metal has developed these "spots", it's hard to machine them out of it, as the actual metal structure has changed. Turning the rotors will help, but it may prove to be only temporary, with the symptom returning all too soon. Ultimately, many folks here find better results going with an aftermarket rotor which is not so prone to developing judder issues. Maybe this is not at all what you're experiencing with your car, and hopefully not, but do pay particularly close attention to any shake in the steering wheel when braking down firmly from a higher speed ( as in a freeway off ramp leading directly to a traffic light that you end up missing at the last second and have to go hard on them, or just a steep downhill off ramp to a stop sign)
This sounds right for my situation. They don't feel horrible (just feel a little judder"y"and a little noisy) and as long as they don't look/act compromised, I'll ride them out longer and save for an upgrade
