^ its air flow, plain & simple.
The windshield & roof profile are what shapes the air over the car.
The cars that have quiet SRs (most BMW) have a profile that lifts the air flow slightly above the SR opening & therefore generates less noise.
They also use a notched deflector instead of the flat bar that we have. This also minimizes the noise.
I might experiment with this myself...

nice DIY, you rock, this was actually pissing me off as I'd constantly open/close the SR depending on how fast I'd go/what roads-highways I'd use.
now i can make the most of that sunroof i paid for.
